Job Description
Join a growing fabrication shop as a Mig / Tig Welder, working on diverse projects across automotive, defense, industrial filtration, and retail signage. This role focuses on prototype and custom work rather than high-volume production, offering the opportunity to work with mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum on a variety of intricate assemblies. You will contribute to a small, close-knit team in a job-shop environment that is actively expanding its customer base and project portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Perform high-quality Mig welding on prototype and custom parts, primarily using mild steel and stainless steel ranging from 18-gauge to 1/2-inch thickness.
- Set up welding machines correctly, including selecting appropriate settings and temperatures for different materials and thicknesses.
- Read and interpret blueprints to determine weld locations, dimensions, and fabrication requirements.
- Fit and fabricate components according to blueprints, ensuring accurate alignment and proper fit-up before welding.
- Utilize fabrication tools such as 1-2-3 blocks, tape measures, 90-degree squares, clamps, grinders, and plasma cutters to prepare and assemble parts.
- Perform basic assembly and intricate fabrication work as needed, supporting a variety of projects for multiple industries.
- Work with materials including approximately 85% mild steel, 10% stainless steel, and 5% aluminum.
- Use hand tools, grinders, and other shop equipment to clean, grind, and finish welds and fabricated components.
- Collaborate with team members in a small-shop environment to meet project deadlines and quality standards.
- Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude and contribute to a strong, respectful shop culture.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn Tig welding and expand welding capabilities over time.
- Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Adapt to varying workloads, including repetitive tasks on some jobs and unique prototype work on others.
- Support continuous improvement efforts as the shop invests in new equipment and upgrades to the facility.
Essential Skills
- 4+ years of Mig welding experience focused on prototype or custom welding work rather than high-volume production.
- Proven experience welding mild steel and stainless steel from 18-gauge to 1/2-inch thickness.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints for welding, fitting, and fabrication.
- Hands-on fitting and fabricating skills, including the ability to accurately fit parts together prior to welding.
- Proficiency using tools such as 1-2-3 blocks, tape measures, 90-degree squares, clamps, grinders, and plasma cutters.
- Ability to set up welding machines and adjust them to the correct temperature and settings for different materials and thicknesses.
- Experience working with mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum in a fabrication environment.
- Comfort using hand tools, grinders, and other common shop equipment.
- Reliable blueprint reading and measurement skills to ensure accuracy and quality.
- A consistently positive attitude, strong work ethic, and ability to fit well within a collaborative shop culture.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Willingness to learn Tig welding or prior exposure to Tig welding processes.
- Experience with fitting and fabrication in a job-shop or custom fabrication environment.
- structural steel, sheet metal, or construction-related welding and fabrication.
- Familiarity with press brake operations and general metal forming processes.
- Ability to work with flux core welding when required.
- Comfort working on both repetitive tasks and one-off prototype or intricate assembly projects.

Work Environment
Work in a smaller, family-style fabrication shop with approximately 20 team members and plans to grow significantly over the next 1–2 years. The facility operates as a job shop with a wide range of projects across multiple industries, providing variety in day-to-day tasks. The building is older, which means it can be cold in the winter and warm in the summer, but the company continues to invest in upgrades and improvements to the plant. You will work with typical fabrication and welding equipment, including Mig welders, grinders, plasma cutters, press brakes, and standard hand tools. The role is primarily on first shift, typically 7:00 . to 3:30 ., with potential variations such as 6:00 . to 3:30 . or until 4:30 . depending on overtime needs. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays as required to meet project demands. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
