The annual base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents varies by grade level, ranging from GL-5 to GL-7, with earnings between $51,632 and $92,219 per year. In addition, BPAs enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in a retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment and Retention Incentives
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives. The first $10,000 is awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, while the additional $10,000 is offered for accepting a prioritized location. Furthermore, newly appointed agents can earn up to $40,000 in retention incentives over the first four years.
Important Duty Locations
Agents may be assigned to critical duty locations, primarily along the Southwest Border, where relocation may be necessary. Performance in various locations can affect pay rates, with locality pay for federal law enforcement potentially increasing base salaries by up to 25%. This role advances through a career ladder, with expected promotions every 52 weeks upon meeting the necessary criteria.
