Assistant Superintendent – Commercial Construction
Reports To: General Superintendent
Supervises: Foremen, Carpenters, Apprentices, Laborers
Position Summary
The Assistant Superintendent supports the Superintendent and project team in delivering commercial construction projects on time, on budget, and safely. This role assists with daily field operations, coordination of self-perform crews and subcontractors, scheduling, safety enforcement, and quality control from pre-construction through closeout. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and proactive in driving jobsite performance and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Support jobsite setup, logistics, field coordination, and execution of the project schedule
- Assist in supervising self-perform crews and coordinating subcontractor work
- Maintain strong working relationships with project teams, clients, architects, and inspectors
- Help manage project schedules, including three-week look-ahead planning
- Coordinate material deliveries and equipment to align with construction sequencing
- Enforce safety and quality standards; identify hazards and assist with corrective actions
- Complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), safety inspections, and daily field reports
- Review installed work for compliance with plans, specifications, and quality standards
- Track subcontractor deficiencies and verify corrective actions
- Assist with change order coordination, punch list execution, and project closeout
- Maintain accurate jobsite documentation and daily communication with the Superintendent
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent on commercial construction projects
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field preferred
- Proficiency with Procore, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Project
- Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and safety practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- OSHA 30 certification required
- Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Active jobsite environment with indoor and outdoor work
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions
- Exposure to noise, moving equipment, and active construction operations
