Job Summary
TRIO STEM Tutor II will provide a productive, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment that will guide first-generation and low-income students toward study practices, success strategies and aides that help them excel in college. TRIO STEM Tutors hold responsibilities such as being able to answer general student questions, provide customer service, tutor TRIOSTEM students on an individual basis or group setting. This is a pooled position, and the department reviews applications as positions become available. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Under the supervision of a TRIO STEM Advisor, tutors will:
- Manage tutor referrals from TRIO STEM staff
- Participate consistently in appropriate follow-up, documentation, and evaluation activities, including, but not limited to checking and responding to email, text, phone calls and other communication means.
- Create a welcoming environment for students.
- Meet with supervisor on a recurring basis or as needed to go over completed tutor tasks.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications
- 3.0 GPA
- Is a current SLCC student
- Active SLCC TRIO STEM participant
Preferred Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The TRIO STEM Tutor must:
- Create and advocate for a welcoming environment for students.
- Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
- Employ excellent communication skills, including active listening and responding skills.
- Work collaboratively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments and community personnel.
- Gather, process, and organize large amounts of information accurately.
- Utilize basic computer operating systems and SLCC’s computer systems (MySuccess, DegreeWorks, Ring Central).
- Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.
- Demonstrate professionalism.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
