The Resident Advisor supports AFG’s mission and its goal of transitioning clients from residential care to independent living or family reunification. The Residential Advisor is responsible for overseeing and training participating residents on shelter routines to ensure they understand expectations and follow procedures.
Shifts available :
Full-time (32 hours / week), Friday-Monday, 3pm-11pm OR 4pm-12am
Full-time (40 hours / week), Saturday - Wednesday, 3pm-11pm OR 4pm-12am
On-Call, days and times variable
Key Responsibilities :
- Welcome new residents to the shelter by conducting intakes and orientation. Make certain each new resident completes a physical.
- Provide hands-on independent life skills training (e.g., cooking, cleaning, performing chores, grocery shopping, maintaining hygiene, etc.).
- Meet weekly with caseworkers for assigned clients to discuss issues and progress. Review goals and assist in developing appropriate objectives.
- Mentor and spend time with clients to provide support, review progress towards goals and ensure needs are met. Act as a support system; offer a listening ear. Take residents on outings.
- Help clients prepare for classes and appointments. Assist clients with transportation needs.
- Respond to client’s medical needs including distributing medications, arranging needed medical treatment / advice and facilitating access to emergency care.
- Grocery shop, label / stock food, prepare and serve meals and snacks. Encourage healthy living.
- Conduct house meetings, activities and educational forums, as assigned.
- Facilitate informal group activities and problem-solving among clients, as needed.
- Encourage effective and appropriate parenting skills; provide list of community resources.
- Reinforce and carry out AFG’s disciplinary policy and procedures.
- Facilitate successful shift exchange at the beginning and end of each shift. Update logs and input required paperwork. Complete all forms associated with intake and discharges.
- Respond to callers seeking service from our 24-hour crisis line.
- At night, conduct rounds every 15-30 minutes. May complete a detailed cleaning of the facility.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.

HS diploma is required with some coursework in a social work or human services field preferredSix months to 1 year of experience working with adolescents or young adultsGood written and oral communication skills, diplomacy and tactMust possess a current driver’s license, good driving record and reliable transportationRequires basic computer software and data entry skillsMay be trained to perform some of the key responsibilities listed above
