Electrical & Controls Engineer – EV Battery Welding Systems
Location : Holt, Detroit, or Lansing, MI (Hybrid – 2 days onsite)
Travel : Up to 75% (domestic)
About the Role :
We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Electrical & Controls Engineer – EV Battery Welding Systems to lead the design, integration, optimization, and ongoing support of advanced micro-welding equipment used in high-volume EV battery manufacturing. This role focuses on delivering safe, repeatable, and high-quality welding solutions for high-voltage flex circuits supporting battery cells, modules, and packs.
The ideal candidate is an innovative, data-driven engineer with deep experience in electrical and controls systems, a strong commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced EV launch environments. This is a hybrid role based in the greater Detroit area and part of a corporate engineering organization.
What You’ll Do :
Electrical & Controls Engineering
- Design, specify, and troubleshoot electrical and controls systems for high-voltage flex circuit micro-welding equipment, including laser and resistance welding platforms
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and I / O documentation for automated manufacturing systems
- Integrate PLCs, motion control, laser controllers, HMIs, safety PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), and industrial networks (EtherNet / IP, Profinet, Modbus)
- Ensure compliance with NFPA 79, IEC, UL, and internal high-voltage manufacturing standards
High-Voltage Micro-Welding Process Support
Support electrical and controls aspects of micro-welding processes for battery tabs, busbars, voltage sense tabs, and module interconnectsSupport welding of copper, aluminum, nickel, and plated materials, including dissimilar metal jointsInterface with laser sources (fiber and disk), beam delivery optics, galvo scanners, various wavelengths (blue, red, green), and resistance welding power suppliesImplement and support real-time weld monitoring and feedback systems (current, voltage, energy, displacement, plume monitoring, vision, pyrometry)Support weld validation and quality requirements per ISO 13919, ISO 6520, AWS, and customer-specific battery standardsBattery Safety & Compliance
Support electrical safety requirements in high-energy EV battery manufacturing environmentsDesign and validate Class 4 laser safety systems, including enclosures, interlocks, LOTO, light curtains, and safety PLC architecturesEnsure proper grounding, isolation, and ESD controls critical to battery productionSupport compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and customer-specific EV battery quality and safety requirementsManufacturing, Launch & Commissioning
Lead electrical and controls support for FAT / SAT, equipment commissioning, production launches, and ramp-upProvide hands-on troubleshooting to minimize downtime, scrap, and weld-related defectsDrive continuous improvement initiatives focused on OEE, FPY, defect reduction, and equipment reliabilityPartner with maintenance teams to develop PM standards, troubleshooting guides, and training materialsQuality, Traceability & Data Systems
Support PFMEA, DFMEA (as applicable), Control Plans, and Cp / Cpk activities related to welding processesImplement weld data collection, traceability, and MES integration tied to serial numbersParticipate in structured problem-solving (8D, A3, root cause analysis) for quality or reliability issuesSupport PPAP submissions, customer audits, and launch readiness reviewsCross-Functional & Supplier Collaboration
Collaborate with battery process, mechanical, automation, quality, and reliability engineering teamsInterface with laser OEMs, welding equipment suppliers, system integrators, and vision vendorsProvide technical support to global manufacturing sites as neededRequired Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field5+ years of electrical engineering experience in automotive or EV battery manufacturingHands-on experience with laser and / or resistance micro-welding systems in high-volume productionProficiency with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Allen-Bradley and / or Siemens PLCs, and industrial networksExperience with laser systems, welding power supplies, safety systems, functional safety, weld monitoring, vision, and data acquisitionStrong analytical, troubleshooting, and data-driven problem-solving skillsEffective communicator in cross-functional, fast-paced launch environmentsPreferred Qualifications :
Experience supporting EV battery cell, module, or pack manufacturingUnderstanding of battery architectures (prismatic, cylindrical, pouch)Knowledge of current collector assemblies and battery tab micro-welding (Cu-Al, Cu-Ni, Al-Al)Laser safety certification or experience managing Class 4 laser systemsExperience with MES integration, weld traceability, and data analyticsPhysical, Safety & Travel Requirements :
Ability to work in office and manufacturing environmentsCapable of supporting equipment installation, commissioning, and onsite troubleshootingRequired travel up to 75% domesticallyAbility to sit, stand, and move throughout production environments as neededCompany Description
