Carpenters are required to perform a variety of tasks including erecting and setting forms for vertical and horizontal concrete structures and site work, per specifications and drawings. Essential job functions include performing journeyman level carpentry work, reading and interpreting measuring tools, and understanding project plans, blueprints, and other written instructions and diagrams. Carpenters must fully understand plant north and drawing coordinates, set and place forms to proper elevations and locations, and prepare the base and install proper reinforcing. Experience in setting and erecting forms using a wide variety of materials and forming systems is necessary. Carpenters must mark cutting and assembly lines on materials, shape materials to prescribed measurements, and assemble, fasten with nails, dowel pins, or glue. They should verify accuracy of structures with plumb bob and carpenter's level and perform general carpentry tasks such as building and installing barricades, decks, and shelves. Knowledge of forming and finishing walls, footers, grade beams, and laying out and properly building and placing embeds, anchor bolts, etc. is required. Carpenters must construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete, assist in placing and tying rebar, and assist in placing and finishing concrete. They should also disassemble, remove, and clean form materials, erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level, and work in other crafts as appropriate to their training and skills. Carpenters must be able to take direction from a higher skilled worker or foreman and have basic knowledge of the construction processes involved in heavy industrial construction. They must support the project with other tasks as directed by supervision.
Education and work experience requirements include four years related experience and / or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience. NCCER certification or license is preferred. Minimum four years of experience in a journeyman level role is required.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include being knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations, actively participating in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors, and setting a personal example of safe behavior. Carpenters must read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. They should add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10's and 100's, and perform these operations using units weight measurement and volume. Carpenters must have common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form, ability to work within precise standards of accuracy, and follow set procedures and standards. Other duties may be assigned.
Physical demands include working up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions. Carpenters may need to maintain physical strength and stamina, use arms, hands, and legs fully, push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks. Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals is required. Uncontrolled environmental conditions may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and / or loud noises. Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required. Carpenters may need to work in confined, cluttered, and uneven areas, at heights, and must abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements. They must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights. Carpenters should evaluate information based on measurable standards, see details in objects or drawings, recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings, visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings, keep good balance and work at heights, see well, hear well, and coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
Hours : This position is a full-time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to project requirements. Travel : Travel required up to 90%. Position requires presence directly on the project site location with intermittent travel to residence of record.
