The Southeast Asia (SEA) Collection at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Library encompasses Brunei Darussalam, Burma / Myanmar, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. It includes materials in both Western and vernacular languages, with strong holdings in the social sciences, humanities, and arts. The Philippine Collection, which is closely related, is managed separately by the Philippine Studies Librarian. The SEA Collection supports undergraduate and graduate teaching and research across disciplines, including Business and Tropical Agriculture, with particular depth in Indonesian studies and growing strengths in Vietnam and Cambodia. Since 1965, the Southeast Asian languages program has offered instruction in Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese, which the collection actively supports. Recognized as one of the most comprehensive Southeast Asia collections in the United States, it includes rich print and digital resources that serve faculty, students, and scholars at UHM and around the world.

Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Library invites applications for a collaborative, innovative, and service-focused Southeast Asia Studies Librarian to support research, teaching, and learning in Southeast Asian Studies. Responsibilities include reference, collection development and management, and bibliographic instruction in Southeast Asia, and in Asia more broadly. The librarian works in partnership with faculty and students across campus whose research and teaching focus on Southeast Asia, and serves as the Library’s liaison to the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.

Support the long-standing tradition of external funding for the Southeast Asia Collection by maintaining positive donor relations and pursuing grant opportunities to strengthen and expand the collection.

Provide professional reference services at the Asia Collection reference desk, responding to inquiries from faculty, students, and the public. Offer in-depth research consultations and work collegially with Asia Collection colleagues, actively participating in departmental and library-wide initiatives.

Design and deliver specialized instruction for Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, and related disciplines. Collaborate with teaching faculty and fellow Asia Collection librarians to create tailored instructional programs. Prepare bibliographic guides and instructional resources in print and digital formats.

Manage collection development for Southeast Asia in the humanities and social sciences. Select materials in all formats, including digital resources, based on current and emerging teaching and research needs.

Maintain knowledge of publishing trends and maintain contacts with Southeast Asia publishers to ensure a balanced and comprehensive collection.

Administer the Library’s participation in the Library of Congress Cooperative Acquisitions Program for Southeast Asia (CAPSEA) in Jakarta, ensuring alignment with the collection’s priorities and the University’s academic strengths.

Work with other institutions, scholars, and consortia to enhance resource sharing and scholarly communication on Southeast Asia.

Provide general and specialized reference services in person and online. Consult with students, faculty, and colleagues on Southeast Asia Studies topics and advise on emerging digital tools and methodologies that enhance scholarship in the field.

Maintain awareness of developments in information technology, digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and copyright, particularly as they relate to Southeast Asia Studies.

Librarians hold faculty status and are expected to meet requirements for tenure and promotion through professional development, travel, research, service, and other scholarly and institutional contributions.

Minimum Qualifications

Librarian II (B2) Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a college or university of recognized standing.

Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Familiarity (written or oral) with at least one Southeast Asian language (e.g. Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, or others, excluding Philippine languages).

Ability to communicate fluently in English.

Librarian III (B3) Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in library or information science; in addition to the Master’s degree, 24 post-baccalaureate credits of academic study; and at least three years of appropriate experience.

Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Familiarity (written or oral) with at least one Southeast Asian language (e.g. Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, or others, excluding Philippine languages).

Ability to communicate fluently in English.

Librarian IV (B4) Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in library or information science; a second Master’s degree in a specialized subject area; and seven years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian III.

Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Familiarity (written or oral) with at least one Southeast Asian language (e.g. Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, or others, excluding Philippine languages).

Ability to communicate fluently in English.

Desirable Qualifications

Working knowledge of a Southeast Asian language (e.g., Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, or others, excluding Philippine languages) or a relevant European language such as French or Dutch.

Research experience and / or coursework in Southeast Asian studies or a related field.

Demonstrated creativity and initiative in program or project development.

Understanding of the issues and practices related to managing area-focused collections in an academic library.

Familiarity with Southeast Asia publishing, the book trade, and acquisition trends.

Experience providing reference services, collection development, and bibliographic instruction in an academic library, particularly for area studies.

Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in academic libraries, including digital scholarship and resources.

Experience with library acquisitions, collection management, and technical processing.

Evidence of engagement with professional associations at the international, national, or regional level.

Understanding of budgeting processes and resource management.

Demonstrated experience creating or managing web pages, digital collections, or online resources related to Southeast Asia or area studies.
