Electrical Engineer Intern (Electric Substations)

This position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES :

Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student's intern position will end within three months after graduation.

Pay Rate :

$21.00 - $24.00 / hour

Work Schedule :

Monday - Friday, 7 : 30 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m.

Job Description :

PURPOSE OF POSITION :

Performs basic engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department's goals under close supervision of the Manager-Substation Engineering or designee. Work will be performed under the mentorship of various experienced Substation Engineers. Duties will be dependent upon departmental workload and may include any or all of the duties described below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

1. Assists in the preparation of detailed specifications and drawings utilized in soliciting and evaluating bids for substation equipment and other miscellaneous materials.

2. Assists in review of shop drawings on equipment purchased for use in substations.

3. Assists in preparation of drawings for installation of equipment within substations.

4. Assists in the preparation of calculations of grounding requirements and the design of substation ground grids.

5. Assists in the design of protection and control systems.

6. Assists in the developing of schematic, logic, and wiring drawings for connection of protection and control, SCADA and communications devices.

7. Assists in the analysis of various new materials as may be required to establish new approved material vendors or equipment suppliers.

8. Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education and Experience :

Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Engineering from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology is required. Electrical Engineering majors are preferred. No previous engineering experience is required.

Licensing / Certification :

Must have a valid driver's license (minimum Class F).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Pay attention to detail.

Physical Requirements :

Must be able to bend, stoop, and walk long distances over uneven terrain to survey electric line facilities. Must be able to express or exchange ideas and receive detailed information through oral and written communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and / or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Must be able to visually differentiate between color-coded lines and symbols associated with utilization of AutoCAD and / or graphic work design tools.

Working Conditions :

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside field work in all weather conditions.
