The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is seeking motivated individuals eager to join an elite team dedicated to the mission of safeguarding America. The Border Patrol is actively hiring full-time, entry-level Law Enforcement Officer positions.

Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary for newly appointed BPAs varies based on grade, ranging from GL-5/GL-7 at $49,739 to $89,518 per year. Duty location can impact pay rates, with potential additional locality pay. This career ladder position allows for progression to higher grade levels (GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12) with eligibility for promotion after completing 52 weeks at each level.

Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may receive a bonus of up to $20,000, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and the remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location.

Retention Incentive: Up to $40,000 in additional incentives may be available over the first four years of service.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a BPA, you will work as part of a 60,000+ strong team dedicated to protecting the American people, deterring illegal activities, and enhancing economic prosperity. Your responsibilities may include:

• Detecting and investigating individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
• Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers while conducting surveillance operations.
• Interpreting and following physical evidence related to illegal entries.
• Conducting various checks, including farm, building, traffic, and transportation checks.
• Patrolling international borders and coastal waterways using various government assets.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following:

Experience: One year of general work experience demonstrating leadership, decision-making, composure, and effective information gathering.

Education Substitution: A completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: A mix of relevant work experience and education, calculated through your submitted resume and transcripts.

To qualify for the GL-7 grade level, you must meet one of the following:

Experience: One year of specialized work experience demonstrating judgment, decision-making, and effective information analysis related to law enforcement.

Education Substitution: A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate education related to law enforcement.

Other Requirements

Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is mandatory to apply.

Residency: You must have lived in the U.S. for three out of the last five years.

Age Restriction: You must be under 40 years old at the time of selection unless you meet specific veteran criteria.

Formal Training: Selected candidates will undergo intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for six months, focusing on law enforcement skills, physical training, and Spanish proficiency.
