The Department of Special Education invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in September of 2026. The successful candidate will work with both undergraduate and graduate students. Their teaching responsibilities will include courses in non-licensing and licensing Undergraduate and Graduate Special Education programs, as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Special Needs and Teacher of Students with Severe Special Needs. The selected individual will also be responsible for supervising student teachers and advising undergraduate and graduate students in the department’s teaching licensure programs.
The successful applicant will also collaborate with department faculty and engage with College of Education & Health Sciences colleagues and other internal and external partners on the assessment, refinement, and expansion of existing programs, and they will model effective practices relating to inclusiveness, student-centered teaching and social responsibility; this position requires regularly scheduled office hours for student consultation.
- Earned PhD or Ed.D. in Special Education, Education, or a closely related discipline from an accredited university, with documented coursework highly relevant to special education teacher education. Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment. Terminal degree must be completed by August 2026.
- Minimum three years’ experience teaching students with disabilities in P-12 settings.
- Minimum three years’ experience in assessing and teaching courses in teacher education at the college / university level, to ensure the greatest possible learning outcomes for teacher candidates.
- Ability to advise students working towards the Massachusetts special education licensure endorsement for teachers of students with moderate disabilities, as well as teachers of students with severe disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to design and teach online, and incorporate technology use into all courses.
- Effective interpersonal collaboration, and oral and written communication skills with students and colleagues, including those from diverse racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated commitment, through experience and training, to excellence in teaching, advising, service, and scholarship; demonstrated commitment to working in a university community that embraces equity, inclusion, belonging and multiple perspectives; commitment to excellence in PreK-12 education for all.
- Teaching experience, especially a high level of content knowledge pertaining to literacy across the lifespan, especially around literacy issues experienced by students with moderate or severe special needs.
- Demonstrated expertise in special education assessment, teaching research methods, and literacy across the lifespan.
- Expertise in cultural and linguistically sustaining pedagogy.
- Experience with and / or knowledge of special education teacher licensure processes.
- Evidence of scholarly activity and contribution to the content of the discipline.
- Demonstrated commitment to service on departmental and university committees.
- Willingness and demonstrated ability to move towards service in a department leadership role.
