Bilingual Pediatric Medical Assistant

The Bilingual Pediatric Medical Assistant will work collaboratively with our exceptional pediatric team, serving patients from infancy through young adulthood (ages 025). This role requires flexibility to support both pediatric clinic locations based on operational needs. The ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural sensitivity and a strong commitment to supporting patients with limited access to economic and healthcare resources, both in-person and remotely via phone or Tele-Health platforms such as Zoom. Daily responsibilities include bilingual communication (Spanish and English), translating clinical terminology for patients and colleagues, and performing courteous patient check-in procedures using both in-person and virtual technologies. The MA will adhere to CDC guidelines during flu seasons and pandemics and maintain strict compliance with University and professional standards. Engagement with community partnersincluding public health agencies, specialty providers, hospitals, and other healthcare facilitiesis expected. Participation in regular team huddles, meetings, and staff development sessions is required. The position also encourages ongoing professional growth through CU's robust learning and development resources.

Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Primary Healthcare, and is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. There are two convenient locations to serve community health needs, primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver, and Jefferson counties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the Sheridan School District Administration building. The Family Health Clinic, located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus, provides services to adults and children. Notably, 65% of its clients identify as Latinx, and 42% are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language. Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal and postpartum, gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance use treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home, and as such, we uphold a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values and beliefs of the patient in all decision-making. We extend the reach of the clinic through public health outreach, where nursing students provide community outreach, health education, and home visitation services.

Direct supervision will be provided by an RN for Case Management, an APN Clinical Lead, or the SHS Clinical Operations Manager.

Examples of duties performed (Direct Patient Care: 70%; Administrative Responsibilities: 30%):

  • Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to:
    • Measure and document vital signs and notify providers of out-of-range values.
    • Review and complete medication reconciliation.
    • Accurately document the patient's chief complaint and health history.

  • Administer immunization, maintain immunization records, and complete annual immunization training within the timeline set by the supervisor.
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties regularly and as needed, including covering front desk staff and answering overflow incoming calls during absences and busy times.
  • Courteously answer phone and schedule appointments, fax and upload orders, internal and external records/reports, and prepare school documents for the provider's signature.
  • Work with the MA team to maintain supply inventory through tracking and stocking, including maintenance of sterilized instruments. Also places orders for replacements through the Compliance Officer.
  • Fax prescriptions to the pharmacy as requested by providers and participate in insurance Prior Authorizations (PARs), as needed.
  • Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned, including clinic grant initiatives.

At the Medical Assistant I level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other positions in a training and development capacity. At the Medical Assistant I level, the focus is on developing medical assistant skills through basic functions of the position as outlined above, with the intent to promote after approximately 1 year of experience, and completion of specific training and performance evaluations/coaching.

At the Medical Assistant II level, duties are similar to those performed at level I, but the complexity of the job is different. In addition to the examples of work performed at all levels, positions at the Medical Assistant II level:

  • Process basic referrals and imaging study orders.
  • Process prior authorization requests.
