Job Description
Support the mission of Old Dominion University in the operation of regulated research environments. The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining systems and applications that support researchers’ secure research computing needs. They will combine technical skills with big picture thinking to accelerate collaborative regulated research activities and supporting controlled information systems under the National Industrial Security Program (NISP).
Type of Recruitment Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Thorough knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, powershell, and python.
- Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures for system and application administration.
- Considerable knowledge of network design, administration, operations, and security.
- Some knowledge of Windows and Linux hardware and software support and appropriate system practices.
- Some knowledge of the application development lifecycle including build, release, and deployment.
- Some knowledge of public and private cloud environments. Strong problem solving, research, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work in a team.
- Ability to plan work and set priorities.
Special licenses, registration or certification U. S. Citizenship required per DoD CUI dissemination control regulations. Must be eligible for U.S. Secret Clearance. Education or training None Level and type of experience
- Considerable experience using scripting and/or programming languages to develop tools.
- Considerable experience in the automation and orchestration of enterprise environments.
- Some experience managing cloud resources in AWS or GCP.
- Some experience configuring and administering Windows and Linux server environments.
- Some experience providing Windows and Linux application support to users.
- Some experience in the management of containerized and virtual environments.
- Some experience building and deploying containerized applications.
- Some experience working with DevOps tools such as Packer, Ansible, and Gitlab.
Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect or equivalent experience.
- Some experience hardening Redhat and Windows servers using security baselines.
- Some experience using virtualization technologies such as VMware or Nutanix.
- Some experience with package deployment and OS imaging.
- Some knowledge of HPC software and networking technologies.
Conditions of Employment This is a Norfolk-based position working a traditional 40-hour work week. There is an on-call component to this position.
