Description :

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.

This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.

The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates / residents.

The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure.

Nursing skills are applied in the care and treatment of inmates / residents.

The RN attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates / residents.

They prepare a list of inmates / residents to be examined and prepare the examining room and equipment.

The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies.

They call Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders or other emergencies.

The RN examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries.

They refer inmates / residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required.

Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider is notified for treatment orders.

The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed.

The RN monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.

They provide guidance, supervise, and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.

Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies is essential.

The RN utilizes established corporate and facility policies in making decisions but uses sound independent judgment in their responsibilities.

Regular evaluation of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.

Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is required.

The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all services are documented.

Close monitoring of potential catastrophic illnesses is performed.

The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as directed.

Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required.

The RN observes and records inmate / resident behavior.

They inspect the medical unit for items that could be contraband and securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment.

Health counseling and education are provided on an individual or group basis as required.

The RN assists with preparing and maintaining a variety of records, reports, and logs using appropriate grammar.

Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents is required.

The RN processes and responds to lawsuits and may attend court hearings as necessary.

Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services is part of the role.

The RN prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required and takes appropriate action in serious incidents or emergencies.
