CNC Programmer & Operator

Position Overview

The CNC Router Programmer & Operator is a critical member of the Fabrication Team, responsible for translating digital designs into precision-cut components that support dimensional artwork, signage, wall applications, and architectural elements. This role sits at the intersection of craftsmanship, technology, and creative production .

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience operating 3-axis CNC routers and is comfortable working across a wide range of sheet materials commonly used in signmaking, cabinetry, furniture, and creative fabrication . This position requires a strong understanding of router-specific tooling, material behavior, and production workflows, not traditional CNC mills or lathes.

CNC router operators are not button-pushers. They are makers who take ownership of quality, efficiency, and consistency while helping bring artistic vision to life.

Key Responsibilities

Programming & Job Setup

Prepare, review, and execute CNC router programs from customer-supplied or internally generated digital files.

Select appropriate router tooling, fixturing, vacuum strategies, and cutting parameters based on material type, thickness, and design intent.

Set up jobs accurately, including material loading, tool changes, zeroing, and test cuts to ensure first-pass quality.

Collaborate with design, engineering, and fabrication teams to resolve file or manufacturability issues before production.

CNC Router Operation

Operate 3-axis CNC routers safely and efficiently in a production environment.

Machine a variety of sheet and panel materials , including :

Wood, plywood, MDF, hardwoods

Acrylics, plastics, PVC

Aluminum composite panels (ACM), foam, and specialty signage substrates

Monitor machine performance during runs, ensuring dimensional accuracy, clean edge finish, and repeatability.

Make real-time adjustments to feeds, speeds, and toolpaths to maintain quality and prevent scrap.

Productivity & Workflow Optimization

Identify and implement process improvements that increase throughput, reduce waste, and minimize downtime.

Support lean manufacturing practices through thoughtful nesting, material utilization, and efficient sequencing of jobs.

Maintain an organized, clean, and safe CNC router work area.

Documentation & Data Management

Document CNC router standard operating procedures (SOPs) , setup standards, and best practices.

Track and report production metrics including job completion times, yields, and rework to support performance analysis.

Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing systems to improve repeatability and training.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Perform routine CNC router maintenance, including spoilboard resurfacing, tool inspection, vacuum system checks, and dust collection upkeep.

Diagnose and resolve common router-specific issues related to tooling, material behavior, or machine performance.

Partner with maintenance or leadership teams on preventative maintenance planning and machine improvements.

What It Takes to Succeed

Hands-on experience operating 3-axis CNC routers in cabinetry, signage, furniture, architectural, or creative fabrication environments.

Strong understanding of router tooling , feeds and speeds, and material-specific cutting strategies.

Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, cut files, and work orders with precision.

Working knowledge of CAM software used for CNC routers (e.g., VCarve, Aspire, EnRoute, Fusion, or similar).

High attention to detail, craftsmanship, and pride in finished work.

Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative production environment where quality and deadlines matter.

Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement mindset.
