Summary Responsible for inspecting food establishments, mobile trucks, temporary events and swimming pools for compliance with City ordinances in order to prevent foodborne outbreaks and other illnesses. Educates food establishments and the public on sanitary conditions and procedures. Manages restaurant and pool inventory and permits. Work requires limited supervision and the use of independent judgment and discretion.
Essential Functions and Other Important Duties- Provides excellence in customer service
- Consults with managers and employees of food services, property owners, contractors, and officials to recommend changes and provide instruction for the avoidance or correction of unsanitary conditions and violations
- Conducts inspections of food establishments, mobile food trucks, temporary events, day care centers, foster homes, public schools, and public and semi-public swimming pools which includes: responding to citizen complaints within established timeframes; conducting pre-opening inspections for the purpose of permitting; evaluating construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes; recommending issuance of waivers or allowances; and/or, performing other related activities. Some inspections will be performed outside of normal business hours
- Enforces applicable ordinances, which includes: issuing citations and/or establishment closures; preparing correspondence related to violations and forwards to the legal department for potential legal action; performs site follow-ups to ensure resolution of code and/or ordinance violations. Maintains and updates restaurant scores and other relevant materials on the City website
- Prepares and gives presentations on food safety and related program information to owners, managers, schools and/or other interested parties. Participates in reviewing and updating rules and ordinances in an effort to remain compliant with applicable State rules associated with food establishments and Food and Drug Administration program standards
- Performs preliminary review and checks facility construction plans for compliance to state and local health law, rules and ordinances; to include beer and wine applications.
- Investigates public nuisance complaints concerning standing water, mosquito infestations, rodents, and other health-related concerns.
- Performs a variety of administrative activities in support of program operations, which includes: recording inspection data and scores in applicable databases; scheduling re-inspections and follow-up inspections; maintaining accurate and up-to-date listings of food establishments; filing paperwork; responding to requests for information and/or complaints; ordering supplies required for inspections; and/or, performing other related activities. Responds to after-hours environmental emergency situations on an on-call basis
- Prepares a variety of reports related to departmental activities
- Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance

Job RequirementsMinimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: - Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in an applied science
- Two years' experience in consumer/environmental health, or sanitation
OR - Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Preferences: - Bilingual in Spanish and English
- Registered Sanitarian
- Previous customer service or municipal experience
Conditions of Employment: - Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
- Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
- Must pass a physical examination
- Must be able to work overtime when requested
- Must obtain Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation certification as Sanitarian in training and Code Enforcement Officer in training within 12 months of employment
- Must obtain Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation certification as Sanitarian or FDA Inspector certification within 24 months of employment
- Must take and pass FEMA NIMS courses 100, 200, and 700 within 18 months of employment
- Must attend and successfully complete the City's Defensive Driving Course (DDC) as soon as possible after employment (if required to drive City vehicle or personal vehicle for City business)
