Deputy Sheriff

This is a special deputy position responsible to operate an Automated Speed Photo Enforcement (ASPE) Program in St. Mary's County in accordance with all applicable statutes and laws, not limited to St. Mary's County Ordinance No. 2024-02. Primary responsibilities will be to liaison with the ASPE program vendor as needed, validate ASPE generated citations for accuracy and completeness, respond to public inquiries regarding the ASPE program and generated citations, and represent the agency in judicial proceedings resulting from ASPE generated citations.

Essential functions include :

• Liaison with the ASPE program vendor regarding ASPE deployment locations and equipment matters;
• Review ASPE generated citations for accuracy, completeness, and validates same for appropriate disposition;
• Liaison with rental / leased vehicle companies to hold vehicle operators accountable for ASPE generated citations;
• Utilize available databases and resources to research any postal service returned citations for new / corrected vehicle operator addresses;
• Represent the agency in judicial proceedings resulting from ASPE generated citations;
• Liaison as required with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration regarding ASPE generated citation dispositions;
• Successfully complete all agency and MPCTC required training to maintain certification as a law enforcement officer, and that associated with operating the ASPE Program;
• Communicate orally and in writing to public inquiries regarding ASPE generated violations;
• Completes ASPE Program reporting requirements;
• Acquires and maintains reference documents and publications pertaining to ASPE Programs;
• This position is designated as non-essential personnel during inclement weather and other emergencies.
• Performs other traffic safety unit duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Conditions : Work will most often be sedentary in an office setting answering the telephone and operating computer equipment, as well as attending court proceedings to testify on behalf of the agency. Work demands may occasionally require strenuous effort. For example, handling of moderately heavy boxes, moderately heavy tools, equipment, materials, or persons. An employee may be required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. The work environment may involve high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled. This position requires the wearing of a Kevlar vest and when needed, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and / or a Gas / Protective mask.
