As a Project Field Assistant (Biological Science Assistant) in Astoria Oregon you will provide technical assistance on Oregon Plan monitoring projects. The position is shared among up to four separate projects and you will spend varying lengths of time on each project. Duties include :

Surveying selected Lower Columbia streams to count naturally spawning salmon and steelhead

Conducting snorkel counts and / or electrofishing estimates of juvenile salmonids in coastal streams

Monitoring upstream and downstream fish traps

Conducting field surveys to assess the condition of stream habitat

Being responsible for quality control of the information

Writing summaries of sampling results

Maintaining field gear and equipment

Coordinating with ODFW district staff

Requesting permission from private landowners to access sample sites

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background :

Preference will be given to applicants with working knowledge of habitat and fish survey design and project protocols

Experience identifying adult and juvenile fish species especially salmonids

Field survey experience

Monitoring and data collection experience

Experience working with private landowners

Experience interpreting maps

Experience operating GPS units

Anyone who has or is in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological / ecological sciences

The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%
