Driver's license is required. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove artificial nails will lead to termination of the contract. RN's must pass a written exam during orientation. This is an open book exam based on skills learned. Resources will be provided to help pass the exam. A score of 90% is required to pass, or termination will occur. Unit has 18 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are 1 : 4 and 1 : 3 for post-surgical patients in the first 24 hours. Common diagnoses include patients needing intermediate care and downgraded CVICU patients. The unit supports thoracic procedures, electrophysiology, catheterization lab, and structural heart cases. Common patient diagnoses include cardiac and vascular issues such as CHF, atrial fibrillation, and CVAs. RNs are required to titrate drips. Common titratable and / or set rate drips include Amiodarone, Nitro, Nicardipine, Epinephrine, and Cardizem. A charge nurse is available on each shift, but they rarely take an assignment. Patient care techs have a ratio of 1 : 18. Hospitalists and intensivists are in-house 24 / 7, and cardiology is on-call after hours. Respiratory therapists are also available 24 / 7. Telemonitoring techs are utilized, with RNs required to read and interpret cardiac strips. Schedule is managed by the unit manager, with no block or self-scheduling available. Weekend requirements are every other weekend. RNs may be floated to all same-level and lower levels of acuity. Scrub color is navy blue. Shift specific orientation is tailored to individual needs and experience.
