The Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) invites qualified persons to apply for a tenure-track assistant professor position to join our faculty beginning September 1, 2026. Candidates should have demonstrated research and teaching strengths in the sociology of gender / sexualities with a preference for candidates who can teach Queer Theory / Methods. Candidates who are able to teach a first-year course for sociology majors requiring qualitative methods preferred. Candidates should have an emerging / established research program with the potential to generate external funding, a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring, the capacity to expand diversity initiatives on campus, and enhance the university’s commitment to public service.

Our department serves a large undergraduate program with majors in Sociology and Criminology & Criminal Justice. We also offer graduate programs including a Master’s and PhD in Sociology. Candidates are expected to teach courses across our undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Carnegie Foundation classifies UMB as an R-1 (Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production) doctoral-granting and community-engaged university. There are many collaborative opportunities for scholars focusing on the sociology of gender / sexualities via the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies department, the Gender, Leadership, and Public Policy Certificate program, the Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights, and the Center for Women in Politics & Public Policy.

UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $89,950 for this position.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. Exceptional candidates may be considered for salaries above the published range to ensure competitiveness within the academic market.
