DISPATCHER

Job Summary:

This position receives emergency and non-emergency calls through various systems. Obtains needed information from callers and determines the appropriate course of action. Dispatch ADOT mobile response units for emergency and non-emergency incidents as needed. Coordinates information on events with other Arizona cities and counties via Traffic Management Centers and monitors the Wrong Way Driver Detection system. This position handles incidents on a 24-hour/7-day per week schedule including weekends and holidays.

Job Duties:

Utilizes a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), a multi-line phone system, paging/notification system, two-way radios, and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD); when requested, assists other law enforcement entities by tracking in progress criminal activity utilizing the CCTV systems.

Creates and posts message on statewide Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) for emergency and non-emergency incidents, including but not limited to information on crashes, closures, Amber/Silver/Blue Alerts, high pollution advisories, fire warnings, construction, and any other announcements pertaining to roadway travel.

Documents statewide incidents by writing reports using a CAD system which in turn is reported to the public via the 511 public portal/telephone system and on the website. Receives and processes incoming calls and provides assistance and guidance to the general public, public and private entities including DPS, local Police and/or Fire Departments, and other government agencies to assist with traffic control or other inquiries. Completes and maintains DPS TOC certification, remains current on all ADOT training courses, completes on-the-job Dispatcher training and quarterly certification tests; may drive a state vehicle in the course and scope of state business statewide. Enters events via the website for traffic congestion during rush hours and reviews all types of entries for accuracy statewide; reports all freeway monitoring equipment malfunctions or damage to state property to appropriate responders.

Selective Preference(s):

Valid Arizona Drivers license - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) ).

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Experience in radio dispatching, emergency response, traffic monitoring, and/or other relevant experience; Familiarity with Arizona roadways; High School diploma or GED.
