Position Overview

The Senior Academic Advising Training & Development Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining professional development programming for academic advisors and advising managers at the University of Arizona.

This role ensures that the advising community is equipped with the knowledge, tools, and support necessary to foster undergraduate student success. The specialist will lead training initiatives, manage training for key advising technologies, produce advising publications, and serve as a liaison with institutional partners to keep training content aligned with university policy and practices.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous training activities for academic advisors that explain policies, processes, curriculum, and student resources necessary for promoting undergraduate student success and incorporating student development theory into training content to help advisors address various student populations.

Develop and facilitate training activities for academic advisors on Trellis, UAccess, Advising Central Dashboard applying assessment principles to ensure effective outcome for advisors.

Write and refresh business process guides for technology tools such as Trellis, UAccess, and Advising Central Dashboard that are used by advising community while utilizing knowledge of effective teaching theories to ensure a comprehensive training program.

Have the knowledge and expertise to teach / train complex principles, theories and concepts to advising peers.

Collaborate with campus partners at all levels of the institution to understand new or amended campus policies, processes, curriculum, and / or resources that need to be addressed in academic advising training and development.

Collect and analyze data on student success to identify needed training for academic advisors and share with Academic Advising leadership.

Resolve complex problems and questions from the advising community regarding academic policy, process, curriculum and / or services for students.

Curate the monthly advisor newsletter by securing content, organizing content, proofreading content before mailing to academic advising community through Mailchimp.

Participate in developing and delivering new programs such as an annual academic advising conference or summit for the University of Arizona.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Academic advising addressing competencies of relational, conceptual, and informational components of academic advising knowledge.

Effective teaching to produce & deliver training materials for the advising community knowledge.

Student development theory to promote advising approaches that address student retention and completion knowledge.

Program development skills to support the development of a comprehensive advisor training program.

Effective verbal and written communications skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree preferred.

Experience with MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, UAccess, Trellis, Advising Central, and Brightspace / D2L.

Experience with CRM such as SalesForce and SIS such as Peoplesoft or Banner.

3-5 years of academic advising experience.

3-5 years teaching experience.
