Cooperidge Consulting Firm is seeking a Controls & Automation Engineer for a top Industrial Mining & Materials leader in Detroit, MI.
This role is responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of complex automated control systems within a high-capacity mining environment. The Engineer will develop centralized control architectures, integrate Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and maintain a real-time Factory Information System to ensure operational transparency across the site. This is a technical, hands-on position requiring expertise in Allen-Bradley systems and a commitment to maintaining safety and reliability standards in a critical industrial setting.
Job Responsibilities
- System Design: Design and implement automated control systems featuring both automatic and manual override modes to ensure process continuity.
- HMI Development: Develop and integrate sophisticated Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for real-time operator monitoring and system control.
- Information Architecture: Establish and maintain a site-wide Factory Information System providing real-time data access across the entire mining operation.
- System Integration: Provide advanced technical support for integrating standalone mechanical and electrical components into centralized SCADA control systems.
- Troubleshooting & Optimization: Maintain and optimize PLCs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), instrumentation, and critical network infrastructure.
- Capital Projects: Support the commissioning of new equipment and lead the technical execution of site-wide capital automation projects.
- Cross-Functional Reliability: Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to ensure all automated systems meet strict safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field is REQUIRED.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) or more years of experience in industrial controls and automation is REQUIRED.
- Deep proficiency with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs and PowerFlex drives.
- Extensive experience with HMI platforms (PanelView, Wonderware, or Ignition) and SCADA systems.
- Strong background in industrial networking and Windows/VMware infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of federal mining laws (MSHA) and mining methods.
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Background in the installation or maintenance of mine ventilation and material handling systems.
