Job Title : Float Pool Registered Nurse Profession : Registered Nurse Specialty : Float Pool (MedSurg Tele / Stepdown) Duration : 13 weeks Shift : 12-hour Days, Weekends as scheduled Hours per Shift : 12 hours Experience : Minimum 2 years of experience required License : Valid RN license required Certifications : BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have : Comfort with floating to various MedSurg / Tele and Stepdown units. Description : Float Pool RNs are needed to float between MedSurg / Tele and Stepdown units. The MedSurg units have a capacity of 28 and 29 beds, all private. BLS is the only required certification for MedSurg units. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 : 6-7 on MedSurg. A Clinical Manager is available Tuesday to Saturday who acts as both the charge nurse and nurse manager. Clinical Managers do not take patients unless census exceeds 24. On nights, there is a resource nurse who takes a full patient assignment. Nurse aides are available on Days but not on nights. Staff are required to work every other weekend, and there is a holiday rotation. Scrub color is navy blue, with jackets required to match. Patients are monitored remotely by a monitor tech. Nurses are responsible for reading strips and must be familiar with certain medications and comfort measures. Common diagnoses for MedSurg include post-surgical patients, orthopedics, pneumonia, dialysis, and palliative care. The Stepdown unit has 28 private beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 : 4-5. Nurses must be able to interpret ECG strips and titrate drips, including Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin. A Hospitalist is in-house 24 / 7, and there is an in-house RT and Pharmacy 24 / 7. Shift hours for nurses are 12 hours from 7 AM to 7 : 30 PM and 7 PM to 7 : 30 AM. Nurses are expected to float to the ICU as needed. Orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor. Common diagnoses for the Stepdown unit include heavy cardiac issues, dysrhythmias, and patients downgraded from the ICU.
