The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Senior Vice Chancellor (SVC) for Academic and Workforce Programs. Reporting to the Chancellor of the VCCS, the SVC will be a proven leader focused on the strategic alignment, integration, and coordination of academic, student, workforce, and research programs and services to more than 230,000 learners annually. A key member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, the SVC is a leading advisor who is charged with strategic leadership and delivering a differentiating vision for the System and its Colleges as well as the divisions under its purview.

The SVC will provide leadership for a large and complex portfolio of responsibilities including the strategic alignment, integration, and coordination of academic, student, workforce, and research programs and services. In addition, the SVC will lead mission-driven initiatives for the VCCS. In support of the VCCS mission and strategic plan, the position will focus on integrating and harnessing the major divisions within the system, the preparation and delivery of the “what’s next” for Virginia’s community colleges, and bringing to life the State Board’s vision for one system. Direct reports to the SVC include the chief academic officer, the chief workforce development officer, and the chief student affairs officer. The portfolio also includes the departments and functions for Research and Reporting, Professional Development, the Student Success Center and internally focused strategic initiatives.

The SVC will work with system staff, state government, and system campuses to formulate, plan, and execute short- and long-term collaborations and continue to refine the System’s overarching strategies. They will be expected to be a facilitator for innovative thinking and drive collaborative discussion and decision-making. They will lead the implementation of strategic initiatives in the changing landscape of higher education in ways that recognize and adapt to the needs of today’s learner, strengthen cooperation, expand resources, serve as a fulcrum for good communication, improve operational efficiencies across the system, and meet the educational needs and workforce plans for the state and region.

The SVC will have the character and confidence to work comfortably in a highly visible role and to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents. Deeply invested in the idea that good ideas can come from anywhere, the SVC will be committed to developing a strong working relationship with and across all system campuses and leadership, state and local governments, system and college boards, statewide business development teams and industry partners. They will work to ensure the community colleges in Virginia are recognized as the top resource for the education and training of Virginia’s current and future workforce and receive the monetary support to deliver on that commitment.

The SVC will develop a think-tank environment for best practices and innovation in higher education. They will engage nationally and establish relationships with other state community college system offices to understand advances in system leadership and campus collaboration and opportunities to expand the reach of the VCCS. Through partnerships and collaboration, the SVC will anticipate state educational and workforce needs and implement planning and strategy to fulfill those needs.

The SVC will ensure that its mission-focused divisions are delivering on their promise in an efficient and effective manner, and that they are integrated in ways that advance the System’s strategic objectives. Areas of focus will also include governance, policy development, systems improvement, and accountability. Learner-centeredness, responsiveness to business and industry needs, a service-orientation to the citizens of the commonwealth and our community colleges, and an insistence on measurable outcomes will be the hallmarks of success for this position.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $225,000 - $275,000 with a generous benefits package. Candidate review will begin immediately.
