General Summary

The Associate Director of Youth Services acts in accord with policies as established by the Board of Trustees as well as directives of the Director but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The Associate Director of Youth Services is accountable for the overall administration of the Youth Services Department, including its services and programs. Provides direct supervision of youth service staff. Coordinates and directs programs of service to children and provides support to those working with children; develops and proposes service programming, policies and procedures; monitors the quality and effectiveness of existing programs and practices; and maintains close contact with all ECPL leadership involved with children's collections and services to ensure administration of quality service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Accountable for the overall operations and administration of the Youth Services department.
• Participates in the youth services collection development and assigns staff to assist with the selection of materials and with weeding specific areas of the collection.
• Supervises and collaborates with the Youth Service staff to determine areas of need in prospective department.
• Develops, implements and updates procedures pertaining to Youth Services.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with governmental agencies, civic and community groups, and the public in general, representing the Director at these events and with these groups and public, as assigned.
• Assists in developing Youth Service department long and short-range goals, objectives and priorities.
• Maintains awareness of developments and trends in librarianship by attending workshops, conferences pre-approved by the Director and reading professional literature.
• Prepares written report as required.
• Presents positive view of library, staff and administration, and services to community.
• Answers library users' reference questions in person and over telephone, using materials in variety of formats (i.e. books, periodicals, newspapers, microfilm, indexes).
• Oversees the planning, preparation and presentation of story times, summer reading activities and special programs for youth.
• Maintains working knowledge of materials collections, services available and trends in library services to people of all ages, primarily youth.
• Interprets ECPL policy and procedures to public in a customer-responsive manner.
• Assists in maintaining youth service records and files.
• Maintains knowledge of circulation system in order to assist at circulation desk.

Supervision Exercised

Direct Supervision of the Professional Youth Service Librarian, Department Assistants Youth Service and Pages assigning duties, outlining methods, directing work in progress, checking completed work, evaluating job performance, taking disciplinary action as needed, issuing commendations as warranted, and being available for consultation on problems that arise.
