About The Night Ministry
The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides housing, health care, and human connection to individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty. Through our Outreach & Health Ministry , we meet people where they are-on the streets, at train stations, and via our mobile Outreach Bus, offering nonjudgmental care, basic needs, and a pathway to more stable living.
As Bus Outreach Supervisor , you will lead a team of outreach professionals providing direct services to unsheltered individuals in Chicago. You will supervise day-to-day operations on the Outreach Bus, support staff and volunteers, and play a key leadership role in maintaining strong relationships with the communities we serve.
What You'll Do
You'll spend the majority of your time in the field-coordinating, supporting, and leading outreach shifts on the Bus. You'll oversee logistics, supervise staff, maintain inventory, and ensure the safe, smooth delivery of harm reduction-based services.
Key responsibilities include :
Supervising, scheduling, and supporting Outreach Professionals during shifts-including providing on-the-street coaching and guidance.
Driving the Outreach Bus and ensuring vehicle inspections and maintenance are completed as needed.
Engaging with individuals accessing the Bus, building rapport through motivational interviewing and harm reduction strategies, and connecting guests to appropriate services.
Supporting and training volunteers and meal groups; serving as a liaison to promote continued community involvement.
Entering data into Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Efforts to Outcomes (ETO), including documentation of client mail.
Coordinating and maintaining organized supply storage and inventory.
Conducting bi-weekly staff supervision and bi-annual performance evaluations.
Participating in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of new outreach team members and interns.
Attending agency and inter-agency meetings, participating in training, and supporting public relations or special projects as needed.
What We're Looking For
You're a hands-on leader who thrives in dynamic, community-based work. You're organized, supportive, and confident managing both direct service delivery and staff supervision. Most importantly, you bring integrity, cultural humility, and calm presence to every outreach shift.
Qualifications :
Minimum of 3 years of experience working with people experiencing homelessness, poverty, or other vulnerabilities.
Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Valid driver's license and insurability required; must be willing and able to drive the Outreach Bus.
Comfortable walking or standing outdoors for extended periods in all seasons.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Deep understanding of harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and Housing First approaches.
Street smarts and comfort navigating neighborhoods across Chicago.
Spanish language skills a plus.

Physical Demands, Work Environment, & Reasonable Accommodation :
This role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, and driving, including operating the Outreach Bus and performing basic vehicle upkeep (e.g., refueling, checking oil). The Bus Outreach Supervisor must be able to assist with lifting and moving supplies (up to 20 lbs) and work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. The noise level is generally moderate but may fluctuate depending on outreach location. The position also requires the ability to work nontraditional hours, including evening shifts and occasional weekends.
