Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean for Faculty Affairs and Planning, the Director for Research Integrity supports the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). The Director receives and evaluates allegations of research misconduct, and manages the further inquiry and investigation into these allegations as the specific case requires. Works independently to implement FAS / SEAS, University, and federal research integrity and related professional conduct policies and regulations. Leads education and training efforts on research integrity and fosters an environment to support the responsible conduct of research.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Has primary responsibility for receiving, handling, and providing responses to allegations of scientific and / or research misconduct involving faculty, staff, post-doctoral affiliates or students within the FAS / SEAS community. Establishes preliminary evaluations of the allegations and provides recommendations to appropriate parties for further actions.

  • Provide staff support for the Faculty Standing Committee on Professional Conduct (CPC), including handling responses to allegations of research misconduct and staffing ad hoc misconduct case committees
  • Ensures proper sequestration of research materials occurs in accordance with federal and University policy and relevant materials are secured, inventoried, and retained per regulatory and university policy.
  • Performs case management and investigation duties related to research integrity and professional conduct reviews, including; notification of respondents and witnesses, providing training to CPC committee members, inquiry and investigation panels, review, analysis and interpretation of case materials, identifying expert witnesses, writing reports for the committee consideration 6) drafting report on behalf of the committee
  • Develops written policies and procedures for responding to allegations of research misconduct. Implements federal regulations, sponsor policies, Harvard and FAS / SEAS policies related to research integrity.
  • Identifies needs and creates guidelines / policies pertaining to research integrity and related professional conduct matters for FAS / SEAS. Maintains currency on policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to state laws, federal regulations, and national trends influencing issues of research integrity and related professional conduct matters.
  • Serves as subject matter expert and provides advice to administrators, faculty and students reporting research integrity and related professional conduct matters. Provides guidance, information and education to researchers, staff, students and administrators regarding the interpretation and implementation of the regulatory requirements related to research misconduct and related professional conduct matters.
  • Collaborate with other School-level Research Integrity Officers, Harvard University Information Technology, Office of General Counsel, and other offices throughout the CPC review process.
  • Provides information to appropriate government agencies, the university's Faculty Standing Committee on Professional Conduct (CPC), and / or other committee as required by law or university policy. Serves as FAS liaison to communicate with the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) and other federal agencies.
  • Serves as director of the FAS / SEAS Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program, overseeing the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of a robust and compliant RCR program for undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral researchers, senior key personnel and principal investigators on federally funded research. Coordinates these efforts with the relevant content experts, OSP, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, federal agencies.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Seven years of related experience in an academic research setting. Experience to include familiarity with applicable federal regulations such as research integrity and research misconduct.
  • Additional Qualifications and Skills :

  • Advanced degree (PhD or JD) preferred.
  • Direct experience with federal regulations and research policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, analytical abilities, and presentation skills essential.
  • Experience working with multiple populations in difficult situations requiring tact and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise high-level of discretion and good judgment.

  • Work Format Details

    This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University's Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
