About the Role
The Managing Attorney – Staff Counsel is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing the in-house litigation team. This team provides high-quality, cost-effective defense for the organization's insureds in civil lawsuits covered by company policies. The Managing Attorney will manage staff counsel attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants, while maintaining an active, complex caseload.
Responsibilities
I. Leadership and Management
- Direct, mentor, and evaluate staff counsel attorneys and support staff engaged in defending insureds across civil litigation (auto liability, property, general liability, and related matters).
- Review and approve litigation strategies, discovery plans, and settlement recommendations.
- Conduct regular file reviews to ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance with company guidelines and best practices.
- Lead the recruitment, training, and retention of high-performing legal talent.
- Manage performance metrics and conduct annual evaluations.
- Foster a professional culture focused on integrity, collaboration, client service, and results.
II. Litigation and Legal Oversight
Supervise and, where appropriate, personally handle high-exposure or complex cases defending insureds.Ensure timely and effective communication with claims representatives, insureds, and company leadership.Provide guidance on case assessment, trial strategy, mediation, and settlement.Coordinate closely with claims management to develop consistent defense strategies and evaluate exposure.Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as required.Review and approve significant pleadings, dispositive motions, and reports.III. Compliance and Risk Management
Research applicable laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.Provide legal opinions on liability, damages, and case value as requested by the Claims Department.Adhere to the company's Code of Conduct and operational standards.Stay current with evolving insurance and corporate legislation, rules, and regulatory requirements.Qualifications
Law Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and excellent academic credentials.Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in applicable jurisdictions and meet and maintain all mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.7+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally in litigation, including insurance defense or personal injury.Strong understanding of insurance company operations, contracts, policy forms, and state filing processes.Management experience preferred.Pay range and compensation package
