POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Analyst supports AANP research activities to meet the organization’s and the department’s strategic goals. The Research Analyst contributes to implementation of research projects; works across the organization to provide research services to other AANP departments; and assists with Research Department administration to ensure project timeliness and quality.
WHERE YOU WILL WORK
This position can be remote, hybrid, or in office. Our office locations are Austin, Texas National Headquarters and Washington D.C. Government Affairs (Arlington, Virginia).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
You are expected to perform the following essential responsibilities of the position with reasonable accommodation. The position may include other responsibilities as assigned.
Data management tasks:
- Acquires and manages secondary datasets such as State Board of Nursing (SBON), National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and National Provider Identifier (NPI) data.
- Communicates with external organizations to support data acquisition and maintains organizational relationships.
- Manages primary data collected through AANP surveys.
- Cleans primary and secondary data to prepare for analyses.
- Leads data governance for all Research Department datasets in collaboration with Vice President of Research and Research team.
Research tasks:
- Conducts analyses of primary and secondary data and supports reporting tasks, including developing tables, graphs, and reader-friendly reports.
- Assists with all products related to the national NP count, such as the NP Fact Sheet and state maps.
- Supports AANP surveys through tasks such as preparing Institutional Review Board submissions, conducting non-response follow-up calls, and administering respondent payments.
- Updates and improves AANP’s longitudinal survey dataset and conducts original longitudinal analyses.
- Assists with literature reviews by collecting and sorting new literature and contributing to syntheses.
- Prepares publications and resources for member-facing department programs.
- Responds to other research support requests from Research Department staff, as needed.
Project management tasks:
- Supports grant projects by reviewing grant applications for compliance with requirements and assisting with grant oversight requirements and project management.
- Assists with department logistics such as meeting support.
- Manages regular deadlines and deliverables for AANP programs such as monthly research digests and conference and member reports.
- Monitors external research requests and assigns to appropriate staff to address.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required:
- A master’s degree in education, economics, statistics, public policy, psychology, sociology or related field. Equivalent experience above the minimum experience requirement can be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
Experience
Required:
- Three or more years of experience in data analysis or health statistics.
Preferred:
- Experience managing surveys and survey data is a plus.
- Grant writing experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required:
- Skills in statistics and data cleaning, management, and analysis.
- Advanced computer competence, including intermediate to advanced skills in STATA (data management and statistics syntax) as well as word processing, spreadsheet design and use, graphics (charts/tables) and data entry. Intermediate-level skills with the MS Office Suite software.
- Strong data analysis and interpretation with ability to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies.
- Ability to write clear, concise research reports and summaries.
- Strong critical/analytical thinking.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform tasks with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to perform all communication in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to blend creativity, logical thinking, problem solving, and technical skills to analyze, interpret, and solve difficult problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills at all organization levels and ability to adapt communication style to audience.
- Demonstrated team player that can work collaboratively with diverse work teams to achieve results.
- Good initiative.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and research projects simultaneously, prioritizing and meeting deadlines, and seeking clarity on priorities when needed.
- Willingness to adapt and be flexible in responsibilities, including taking on program support and qualitative research tasks as needed.
- Adapt research approaches based on evolving questions or constraints.
- Apply judgment in ambiguous or incomplete data environments.
Preferred:
- A good understanding of medical and nursing terminology or health workforce research and policy.
- Data visualization experience.
- Experience with qualitative research methods (or mixed research methods).
- Experience with survey data techniques including sampling, weighting and estimation.
- Knowledge of nurse practitioners or nursing is a plus but not required.
Other
- Ability to travel to, and staff, AANP conferences or events as assigned (less than 5% travel).
