Fisheries Technician

Description:

The Fisheries Technician assists biologists and resource specialists in monitoring and managing fish populations and aquatic habitats on public lands. This position involves fieldwork in streams, rivers, and lakes to collect data, assess water quality, and support restoration or conservation projects. The work directly contributes to habitat protection, species management, and sustainable recreation programs.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct fish population surveys using electrofishing, netting, or snorkeling methods.
• Measure, identify, and record fish species and life stages.
• Collect water samples and record stream flow, temperature, and habitat data.
• Support aquatic habitat restoration projects, such as barrier removals or streambank stabilization.
• Maintain and calibrate field and laboratory equipment.
• Record, enter, and verify biological data in databases or spreadsheets.
• Assist with public education or outreach events related to fisheries and aquatic resources.
• Follow all safety and environmental protocols when working in or near water.

Qualifications:

• Must be age 18+
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

• Interest or coursework in fisheries, biology, ecology, or environmental science.
• Comfort working in and around water under variable weather and terrain conditions.
• Ability to identify common fish species or willingness to learn field identification.
• Basic skills in data collection, GPS navigation, and computer software (Excel, GIS preferred).
• Good teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Physical ability to wade in streams, carry gear, and work long field days.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in fisheries, biology, or natural resources preferred.

Schedule: Mon-Thur, 7:00am to 5:30pm
