Wastewater Collections Crew Chief
Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for performing semi-skilled work and directing the work of others in the installation, construction, operation, and maintenance of water meters, water distribution system, and wastewater collection system.
Essential Job Functions
Wastewater Collections Crew Chief
- Assists and directs the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of sanitary sewer mains, manholes, force mains, pump stations and other related wastewater system appurtenances.
- Investigates wastewater service complaints and reports the finding to superintendent.
- Performs underground utility locates.
- Responds to afterhours call-outs due to repairs, maintenance, or other projects.
- Ensures the completion of work orders.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment for repair and reports and needed maintenance to the superintendent.
- Performs other reasonable duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the construction, maintenance, operation and repair of water meters, water / wastewater mains and appurtenances; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications :
Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Alabama Commercial Driver's License or obtain a Class B Alabama Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date, and have an acceptable driving record.Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Grade I-C Wastewater License or obtain Alabama Grade I-C Wastewater License within one year of hire date.Must be able to work on-call and overtime as necessary.Must maintain regular attendance on the job.Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.All Special Qualifications requirements exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Physical Demands / Work Environment :
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.Knowledge of the various materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer systems including installation of galvanized, copper, ductile iron, PVC and cast-iron water mains and appurtenances; vitrified clay, PVC, and ductile iron sanitary sewers, service laterals, manholes; ductile iron and PVC force mains, associated valves and concrete thrust blocking; and other related appurtenances.Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in general construction and maintenance operations particularly as these requirements relate to work around construction equipment, trench excavations and traffic control around the work site (flagmen, signs, barricades and cones, etc.).Knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City of Northport and surrounding areas.Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).Skill in planning and organizing work.Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.Skill in verbal and written communication.Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and / or accounting purposes.Ability to make simple mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.Possess mechanical abilities sufficient to meet the requirements of the job.Ability to diagnose plumbing defects.Ability to accomplish the work assigned in a neat, efficient manner.Ability to operate various types of equipment normally used in construction of Public Works projects, particularly those associated with water systems including concrete and pipe saws, taping machines, mechanical tamps, etc.Ability to move in and about confined spaces and rough terrain.Ability to work in various types of weather.Ability to work on-call and overtime as necessary.Ability to organize and communicate effectively.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Physical Demands
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required :
