A Brief Overview

Responsible for assisting the physician in caring for the patient and family in accordance with the organization's protocols, policies, and procedures.

Essential Functions

• Assists in the assessment of the health status of individuals including the delivery of patient care to patients and families under the direction of RN or LPN.
• Demonstrates knowledge and delivers suitable care tailored to the corresponding stage of the life cycle.
• Prepares patients for examination by performing routine patient screenings.
• Communicates completion of tasks, and significant abnormalities or clinical changes.
• Documentation is accurate, per clinic standard, and completed in real time.
• Assists providers with exams when necessary.
• Collects phlebotomy and other lab specimens based on department need.
• Performs treatments, procedures, diagnostic / lab testing per protocol and / or order.
• Performs medication administration specific to area of assignment.
• Facilitates registration and utilization of organization's health portal with patients and families.
• Performs other specialty tasks / procedures specific to area of assignment.
• Assists with medication refills based on protocol in specific specialty area.
• Communicates in a compassionate manner and uses medical terminology appropriately.
• Complies with performance improvement practices.
• Facilitates patient flow in clinic by monitoring patient volumes throughout the clinic day.
• Uses good time management and creative thinking when clinic is busy; ensuring patients are informed of any delays.
• Offers resources to patients and families, such as toys, coloring, etc., while in the exam room.
• Ensures exam rooms are clean and ready for the next patient, using the proper disinfectant between patients.
• Maintains supplies in exam rooms and re-stocks items as needed.
• Collects data regarding patient's vital signs and growth and development when interviewing patients / families in the office.
• Coordinates the scheduling of diagnostic tests and procedures with the patient / family, physicians / hospitals and the insurance companies as directed by the provider.
• Assists the physician or nurse practitioner in patient teaching as directed or according to clinic protocol.
• Completes all required patient care documentation and reporting in accurate and timely manner within the electronic medical record.
• Responds appropriately in crisis situations or life threatening emergencies.
• Takes direction from the physician or nurse practitioner in the delivery on patient care.
• Assists with clerical duties as directed by the office manager.
• Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications

Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or current and valid national certification as a Medical Assistant (NCMA) Required
