General Summary :
Duties and Responsibilities : Under the direction of, and in partnership with, the registered professional nurse performs all of the following activities as directed, based on the individual needs of the patient. A. Collects clinical data, reporting any unusual results to the registered professional nurse.
- TPR, BP, Pain Scale
- Intake and Output
- Blood glucose levels
- Height and weight
- Post procedure evaluation
- Performs 12 Lead EKGs as directed in CCU, ER and Telemetry units
- Documents findings in appropriate areas of chart, including shift and 24-hour intake and output totals as needed
B. Performs assigned therapeutic tasks
Lifting, positioning, deep breathing, ambulating patientsDressing changes utilizing aseptic / sterile technique as appropriateFeeds or assists patients with mealsProvides enteral feedings and manages feeding equipmentReinforces specific Occupational Therapy exercises as directedReinforces specific Physical Therapy exercises as directedReinforces specific patient education information as directedAssists with application of restraints as directedOral, nasal and tracheal suctioningFoley catheter, ostomy and decubitus careSpecific pulmonary therapies and application of O2 appliancesC. Collects specimens as assigned
Performs phlebotomy for blood specimen collectionCollects urine, stool and sputum specimens as directedDraws blood cultures and type / cross match for blood administrationD. Assists with the admitting and discharge process.
Ensures that patient rooms are ready for new admissions after cleaning by Environmental ServicesCompletes documentation of admission vital signs, height, weight, and other information as directedArranges for Medicare and taxicabs for patient transport at discharge as directedProvides post-mortem carePerforms unit-to-unit transfers to non-intensive care areasParticipates in discharge planning rounds.May not take verbal or telephone ordersMay transcribe written orders, which must then be signed by the registered professional nurseMay accept phone report of lab results and convey results to the registered professional nurseE. Ensures that care is provided for all patients utilizing the attributes of Careful Nursing.

Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required.Current LPN License as a practical nurse in the State of Illinois required.Current certification in CPR required.ACLS certification encouraged, required within first year for critical care and ER.Completion of Basic Arrhythmia Course within one (1) year of hire in critical care and ER preferred.Knowledge of patients' growth and development needs.Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties
