SUMMARY
Reporting to the Law School Dean, this professional oversees all aspects of Academic Affairs at the Law School by recommending faculty and adjunct teaching assignments; prepares the schedules of course offerings for the Fall, Spring and Summer terms; works with the faculty to receive and approve course syllabi; oversees the administration of exams and approval of all grades submitted by faculty; oversees all aspects of student academic programs and monitors students' academic progress, including the evaluation of students' records for academic supervision, probation, and dismissal; and administers the Honor Code.
Essential Duties
Overseesthelawschool'scurriculargoalsandacademicprogramsby:
- Analyzing program needs and establishing priorities for the curriculum.
- Engaging in strategic and operational planning to evaluate options and initiate strategies for resolution of issues.
- Analyzing and implementing policies and procedures.
- Developing solutions to issues raised by faculty, staff and students using a comprehensive knowledge of Law School, University, and ABA policies and procedures.
- Setting the annual Academic Calendar for the Law School and preparing the course schedules and faculty teaching assignments for each semester term for approval by the Dean.
- Identifying and interviewing new prospective adjuncts and making hiring recommendations to the Dean.
- Reviewingandapprovingallexamsinadvanceoftheiradministrationforpurposesofdeterminingthattheexamsaresufficientlyclear,complex,rigorousanderrorfree.
- Reviewingandapprovingallgradesinadvanceofposting .
Works closely with the Dean by:
- Serving as the Dean's number one point person, or second in command, on matters related to general operations, human resources, and finances and assisting in the leadership necessary to fulfill the mission and goals of the Law School.
- Standinginfor theDeanateventssuchasOpenHouse,AdmittedStudentsDay,etc.
- Dealingeffectivelywithsensitiveandconfidentialissues.
- KeepingabreastofformalandinformalABAstandardsandconstraints.
Workscollaborativelywithall AssociateandAssistantDeansandDepartmentDirectorsby:
- Leading,guiding,directing,andevaluatingtheworkoftheotheradministratorstoensurethatthevariousunitsoftheLawSchool meetsandexceed itsgoals.
- Meetingwithadministratorstodiscussgoals,challenges,newideasforimprovementandtocoordinateinter-officeresponsesandefforts.
- SupervisingtheRegistraranddirectingtheworkoftheoffice.
Monitorstheacademicprogressofstudentsby:
- Reviewingstudents'academicstandingaftereachsemestertodeterminetheneedtohavethemplacedonacademicsupervision,onprobation,ordismissed.
- Preparingalldismissalandprobationletterstostudents.
- Reviewingthetranscriptsofallprospectivegraduatesforverificationof theirsatisfactionofalldegree requirementsandauthorizingthepostingofthedegree.
Administers theHonorCodeby:
- Receiving Honor Code complaints and conducting initial investigations in accordance with the Code.
- Ensuring that all Complaints are processed according to the rules in a timely fashion; notifying all accused students of the disposition of their cases and keeping official records.
- Responding to inquiries from Bar Authorities regarding information on Honor Code by students and graduates.
Draftsreports,preparessurveys,writesdescriptions,andmaintains recordsonbehalfofDean'sOfficeby:
- Completingaccreditationreports,statistics,andcommitteeworkforSACS,ABA,andAALS.
- ServingastheLawSchool'sAdministratorforthepreparationandsubmissionoftheABA'sAnnualQuestionnaire,EmploymentQuestionnaire,andBarPassageQuestionnaire.
Teachonecoursepersemester,whenandasneeded,whilemaintainingregularfull-timeadministrativeduties.
Qualifications/Requirements
- JD required.
- Five to eight years of appropriate administrative experience with a school of law.
- Abilitytoanalyzeprogramneedsandimplementregulations, policiesandproceduresinawidevarietyofcontexts.
- Abilitytoeffectivelyarticulateandadvanceorganizationalgoals.Ability toproducesubstantialreportsandmakeeffectivepresentations.
- Demonstratedknowledgeofprogramsandstrategiesthatenhanceacademicprogramsandsupporttheacademicretentionandsuccessofstudents.
- Skilled in maintaininganopenlineofcommunicationwithpracticingattorneysandjudgestoensurethattheLaw Schoolcanhireadjunctswhoarespecializedintheirareasofpractice.
