Base pay range

$400,000.00 / yr - $400,000.00 / yr

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA-approved school
  • Current, full and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty, leading to eligibility for board certification
  • PRPs (Physician Resident Providers) must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis; they are not independent practitioners
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Board certified / eligible in Anesthesiology with ability to perform anesthesia for basic cardiothoracic cases
  • Preferred : Fellowship training in critical care, cardiac or regional anesthesia and experience in the duties listed below
  • Physical requirements : Heavy lifting (>

45 lbs), straight pulling and pushing, standing for extended periods, sitting, bending; ability to wear lead aprons for x‑ray cases

Duties

  • Open continuous announcement; remains open until May 14, 2026
  • Initial cut-off for referral of eligible applicants : 11 / 28 / 2025
  • The Anesthesiology Service at NMVAHCS is collaborative, comprising anesthesiologists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, anesthesia residents and medical students
  • Provide comprehensive perioperative care, including pre‑operative optimization, intra‑operative management (with involvement in clinical pathways such as ERAS), postoperative care, surgical ICU participation, and acute and chronic pain management services
  • Serve as tertiary referral center for patients across New Mexico and southern Colorado
  • Supervise CRNAs and residents, with opportunities for personal case involvement
  • Scope of procedures : cardiac, vascular, general, orthopedic, ENT, urological, and non‑OR anesthesia (e.g., gastroenterology, interventional radiology, behavioral health, cardiology, pulmonary, MRI)
  • Academic affiliation with the University of New Mexico; potential for joint faculty appointment and clinical appointment at UNM
  • Work schedule : Monday‑Friday 6 : 30 am–3 : 00 pm with possible evening shifts, after‑hours home call, and rotating schedules
