Life Kit is NPR's brand for actionable service journalism. With rigor and in-depth reporting, Life Kit aims to help people become their better selves through its podcasts, digital content, Instagram, broadcast stories and a radio show. We answer how-to questions on well-being, career, health, parenting and personal finance with evidence-based takeaways. We offer our audience frames through which to view life's challenges and provide tips to help people take action. Our team is highly collaborative, curious, nimble and hardworking. We are seeking someone who also embodies these traits to join our team.

The successful candidate will be someone committed to excellence in service journalism and to reaching people where and how they live. The successful candidate will possess a meaningful understanding of social platforms, accompanying formats and best practices as well as relevant experience.

The Life Kit visual editor will produce Instagram posts, carousels, stories and reels that highlight the best of Life Kit advice. They will also collaborate with NPR's visuals department as well as the broader podcast portfolio. They will be the lead editor of Life Kit 's Instagram page and the reel series for that page. They will also work to curate and art direct NPR staff and freelancers for any and all art associated with our digital stories and products. This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA .

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook .All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Life Kit editors to commission, produce, shoot and edit art and video for story pages and visual platforms.
  • Conceive, generate, edit and publish visual projects, features, and packages. This includes Instagram reels and beyond.
  • Manage Life Kit 's Instagram. This includes being the lead editor for draft posts, captions, stories and community engagement.
  • Clearly communicate the vision, project goals, narrative scope and timeline for each production.
  • Function as a key decision maker on the shape and look of regular content and important projects.
  • Maintain and curate Life Kit digital and social properties on a daily basis.
  • Stay up-to-date on trending topics and strategize how the Life Kit catalogue can provide insights on conversations taking place on social media.
  • Coordinate the production, publication and assessment of programming for visual platforms in collaboration with NPR's visual and social stakeholders.
  • Take responsibility for more advanced photography and video tasks, where applicable, including multiple layers of coordination, logistics, creativity and sensitivity in the storytelling.
  • Exercise judgment and discretion to hire freelancers for advanced assignments that require complex coordination, creativity and sensitivity in the storytelling, subject, as well as final sign-off.
  • Excel at directing and executing visual storytelling forms such as cinematography, photography and lighting, as well as be proficient at executing motion graphics, where applicable.
  • Work on unique visual interactives and apps in coordination with multiple teams throughout the newsroom.
  • Maintain NPR editorial and ethical guidelines in all production.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four years of photographic storytelling and video production experience, preferably with a major network or newsroom, studio or creative agency.
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud programs related to video, photo and design. (Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, Canva).
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities / conditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to increasing audience diversity.
  • Be well-versed in copyright and ethical journalism practices.
  • Experience with social media engagement.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Have a strong interest in service journalism.
  • Must be able to lift video equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to contribute to and carry out a comprehensive, cross-platform social strategy.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under tight deadlines and changing priorities / conditions.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and to consistently work well with others and as part of a team, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Four or more years of experience managing social media channels for a major news / media brand.
  • Ability to develop a comprehensive, cross-platform social strategy.
  • Proficiency with Figma
  • Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts discipline, preferably journalism or a writing-intensive discipline, or a Bachelor's degree in business (or the equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Work Location & Requirements

  • SAG-AFTRA Hybrid Permitted : This is a hybrid permitted role. The employee will be required to be in the office at either the Washington, D . C .or New York City location at least 3 days a week. The employee must also reside in Washington, D . C . / Maryland / Virginia / New York City area .

  • This is a full-time, exempt position.
  • Compensation

    Salary Range : The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $102,500 to $109,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

    NPR Benefits : NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR's benefits options. Benefits include access to health and wellness, paid time off, and financial well-being. Plan options include medical, dental, vision, life / accidental death and dismemberment, long-term disability, short-term disability, and voluntary retirement savings to all eligible NPR employees.
