Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Nursing Supervisor the Head Nurse delegates responsibility to nursing personnel for direct and indirect care of adult patients during each tour based on staff qualifications. Assists in determining necessary resources to provide for patients who are high and low risk. By use of the nursing process, plans care based on the patients’ response to the medical processes. Works within the guidelines or regulatory agency standards and Hospital Guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace which enhances and furthers the Mission, Vision and Value Statement of the Network.
2.Ensures that patients receive appropriate care from nursing staff during hospitalization.
3.Uses the nursing process to ensure that staff appropriately monitors medical status.
4.Coordinates all patient care activities.
5.Reports to nursing supervisor and collaborates with Deputy Director of Nursing when indicated.
6.Delivers direct care when required.
7.Orients new personnel to the unit and equipment in collaboration with the supervisor and Nursing Educator.
8.Prepares staffing time schedules according to guidelines.
9.Prepares eight (8) hour clinical report.
10.Ensures staff compliance with standard of care.
11.Refers any unusual findings to the physician.
12.Ensures staff/personnel/family compliance with policy and procedure protocols related to the wearing of proper attire in isolation rooms, e.g. caps, masks, shoe covers and sterile gowns and gloves.
13.Ensures availability of emergency equipment, anesthesia, cardio scope, laryngoscope and other supplies needed for emergency situations.
14.Ensures that staff maintains and prepare resuscitation equipment in readiness.
15.Ensures the equipment used in the care of patient is checked daily during all shifts and after each use to ensure proper functioning at all times.
16.Ensures that supplies and medications used for adult’s resuscitation are replenished.
17.Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers. (Patients, visitors and staff.)
18.Conducts risk assessment to reduce adverse events.
19.Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
20.Explains, involves and instructs patients/families concerning the therapeutic regimen and the environment of care.
21.Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record.
22.Ensures that all admission vital signs, fetal heart rage, weight and height are recorded in the patient’s record.
23.Ensures that care is delivered in a culturally sensitive manner acceptable to the patient and in accordance with hospital guidelines.
24.Develops indicator measurements, monitors and submit monthly and quarterly report to QI Department
25.Supports the family centered concept by involvement in the care and treatment, when applicable.
26.Maintains record of staff and absenteeism.
27.Follows the disciplinary process based on the hospital’s policy.
28.Keep abreast of current modalities in psychiatric nursing services and other relevant areas.
29.Seeks additional training in new techniques specific to psychiatric nursing.
30.Recognize emergency situations and functions effectively according to emergency protocols.
31.Maintains safe work habits and assumes responsibility in patient safety.
32.Observe telephone etiquette and communicate in a friendly and professional manner.
33.Ability to effectively communicate and work medical staff, nurses, clerical staff, patients, families and other health care professionals and management.
34.Ability to work and maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel data.
35.Recognizes that assisting customers with problems is always the priority.
36.Works effectively with other staff members and show respect to other employees
37.Always wear name badge.
38.Performs other professional nursing activities as delegated by Nursing Services Administration/supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and

2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and

3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.

An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below:

Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900
Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200
Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) = $1,800
Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) = $2,000
Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500

An annual certification differential ranging from $1,878 up to $4,878 if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed.

An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $1,042 up to $8,645 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Head Nurse.
