It operates in a very busy, fast-paced, acute care environment. Patients range from all ages, with heavy trauma stabilization including gunshot wounds and stabbings. There is a significant mental health, homeless, drug, and alcohol-addicted patient population. Common diagnoses include stroke, respiratory illness, chest pain, abdominal pain, and diabetes-related complications. Patient ratios typically are RN to patient at 1 : 4. LPN ratios are variable but typically are 1 : 4. CNA ratios are 1 : 20. Required skills include cardiac rhythm interpretation, experience with critical care drips, PIV starts, TNK / TPA administration, and conscious sedation. Support within the department includes CNAs and charge nurses. Technology used in the department includes an electronic medical record system and various medical equipment such as IV pumps and monitors. Staff may be required to float to other facilities within the region as needed. Schedulers aim for every other weekend rotation with no on-call requirements. Travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays and can request up to 6 days off excluding holidays, with any additional time needing to be added to the end of the contract.
