RESPONSIBILITIES
School-Assigned Coordination of ASL Services :
- Schedules and coordinates interpreting services at assigned elementary, middle, and / or
high school levels.
Provides guidance to ASL interpreters.Leads, oversees, and participates in all communications tasks required to assist deaf / hardof-hearing students.
Acts as the primary liaison to school-based administrators for all interpreting / transliteratingservices delivered.
Monitors IEP requirements, student services, and school needs to support and ensure equalaccess to all interpreted materials.
Performs related duties as required or assigned.Student-Assigned ASL Interpreter :
Interprets instructional information in all subject areas from spoken English into signlanguage for deaf students in the district. Instructional information includes lectures,
student discussions, and any other vital classroom communication
Interprets classroom and school building procedures into sign languageInterprets for students during interactions with school personnelInterprets directions for tests - classroom and standardizedPerforms related duties as required or assigned.EXPERIENCE :
Demonstrated strengths in organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
Competency in English and two-way communication in two “languages”— ASL and SEE.Demonstrated professionalism in all communication with school and central officeadministrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and other APS staff.
Ability to establish rapport and to communicate effectively with students, parents, andschools personnel.
Adherence to Codes of Ethics in an educational setting.Ability to serve the needs of hearing-impaired students individually and / or several studentssimultaneously.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Completion of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and have State Board
Certification (VQAS) level 3 or above or,
EIPA Certification with a score of 3.5 or higherOR
Completion of a bachelor’s degree and National Certification by Registry of Interpretersfor the Deaf (RID)
A minimum of two years as an ASL Interpreter is required . Five years of experience and / or
supervisory experience is preferred.
