Job Title : K-12 Civics Programming and Teaching Consultant - Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society

Department : Academic Affairs Administration | Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society

The Ohio State University’s motto, Disciplina in Civitatem , or “education for citizenship,” is not merely a slogan; it is an exhortation to remain focused on the responsibility to develop an informed, engaged, and civic-minded citizenry. It is essential to fulfilling Ohio State’s land-grant mission.

The Chase Center is a multidisciplinary university center that conducts teaching, research, and public programming concerning the core texts and great debates of Western civilization; the principles, ideals, and institutions of the American and Ohio political order; and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. It is an independent academic unit of the University. The Center is a leader of the growing cadre of similar centers of civic thought and leadership in Ohio and throughout the country.

Position Overview :

The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society (“Chase” or “Center”) is conducting a search for four experienced high school teachers, who will work closely with a team of Chase Center faculty to craft high-impact civics programming for K-12 teachers and students. Specifically, these teacher consultants will advise and assist with the development and administration of the Center’s K-12 civic education initiative, Strengthening Civic Education and Bolstering Democracy : Simulation Seminars for K-12 Teachers on the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights , a three-year program funded by the U.S. Department of Education in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Founding of the United States. This position will run through the end of June 2026, with the possibility of renewal.

There are three components to this role, each corresponding with the three components of the Center’s K-12 initiative. First, teacher consultants will collaborate with and support Chase faculty to develop the first year of cutting-edge high school civic education curricula on the Declaration of Independence, (the U.S. Constitution will be subject of year two, and the Bill of Rights in year three). Teachers will help Center faculty leverage K-12 pedagogical strategies to address educational shortcomings––namely, high school students’ civic illiteracy and apathy. Second, teacher consultants will work with Chase faculty to develop week-long workshops to teach these curricula to high school teachers from across the United States. Third, teacher consultants will implement / help Chase faculty teach these three one-week-long workshops in June of 2026.

This role requires significant experience teaching high school civics / social studies, a record of excellence in teaching, creativity, strong communication skills, and the ability to engage various audiences, including faculty, Ohio State colleagues, and prospective partners. We are looking to assemble a group of K-12 teachers from a variety of difference educational contexts ( i.e ., from public, private, religious, and classical schools). K-12 Civics Programming and Teaching Consultants, as with all members of the Center, should embrace the Center’s mission.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Collaborating with Chase faculty on the construction and evaluation of high school curricular materials related to the Declaration of Independence.
  • Developing week-long workshops to teach these curricula to high school teachers across the United States.
  • Implementing / helping Chase faculty teach these workshops for three weeks in Columbus, Ohio in June, 2026.
  • Representing the Center in working with internal and external partners.
  • Fostering the Center’s growing partnerships with K-12 schools.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Chase Center’s mission of citizenship education.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 3 years of high school teaching experience in subjects relating to American civics, OR, any equivalent combination of experience, and / or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Knowledge of U.S. History, Government, and related content pertaining to the teaching of civics in K-12 school environments.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of good teaching.
  • Demonstrated excellence in K-12 classroom instruction.
  • Demonstrated excellence in K-12 curriculum building.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Skill in planning, analyzing, and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in program design and development.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong leadership, creative, and organizational skills.
  • In-person attendance is expected, absent prior agreement by the Center.
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Degree in subjects supportive of the Center’s mission such as civics, history, and Great Books.
  • 10 or more years of experience in K-12 teaching.
  • Experience teaching in a variety of educational contexts including public, private, religious, and classical schools.
