Salary range :

A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach the standard five-credit course is $8,531 - $14,523 (based on salary points 1-19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay ).

Percent time :

Variable, based on the course load assigned (one standard, five-credit course is 37.5%)

Anticipated start :

Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2025 through spring quarter 2026. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.

Position duration :

Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

Cowell College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach Cowell enhancement courses under the general direction of the Cowell Provost. These courses offer students the opportunity for small, seminar-style classes at the college level and they are designed to augment or enhance general education requirements and disciplinary courses. The enhancement courses run alongside Cowell's core curriculum, which focuses on social justice, community outreach, and critical reading instruction. It is expected that selected candidates will contribute to Cowell College's emphasis on social justice and community, and in some cases, they will have the opportunity to design or help develop new enhancement courses. Although trained in one discipline, applicants should be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment and draw from expertise in one or more of the following disciplinary subject areas : humanities, arts, social sciences, or physical sciences.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply :

  • Record of effectively working with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with current theory and research in social justice and community.

The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at the time the application is submitted)

  • M.A / M.S.; or a B.A. / B.S. degree and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a B.A. / B.S. degree and at least two years of teaching experience at the college level. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • Teaching experience demonstrated by college level teaching, TA experience, research presentations, or professional development training seminars.
