PURPOSE

To establish a list to fill an anticipated 11-month, full-time (8 hours / day) position in the Student Support Services Department . This list may also be used to fill future part-time, full-time, permanent, and temporary vacancies for up to one year.

TESTING PROCESS :

Structured Interview = 100% weighting on final score

Tentatively scheduled for : As early as the week of April 21, 2025.

Purpose Statement

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, Student Support Services, the Physical Therapist delivers specialized physical therapy services to eligible students in educational setting. The Physical Therapist assesses, plans, and implements intervention strategies for students aged from infants to 22 years old, focusing on enhancing functional skills and physical well-being. The Physical Therapist collaborates closely with teachers, principals, and staff, delivering personalized therapy services with sound judgment and initiative. This role requires specialized training and licensure in physical therapy practice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses, plans, and provides physical therapy services

Conducts assessments of students and develops reports to determine student's needs for physical therapy

Evaluates student's functional performance in activities that are meaningful, curriculum-oriented, and applicable to daily life routines in an educational setting

Utilizes appropriate evaluation tools, including standardized tests and clinical observations, to assess students and determine the necessity for therapy intervention plans

Develops and implements individualized therapy programs for qualifying students.

Chooses activities to improve student performance in the skill areas (i.e. functional mobility, gross motor, balance, positioning, strength, range of motion, muscle tone, daily living, etc.) necessary for accessing curriculum, learning and functioning within the school environment

  • Collaborates with families, school personnel, and health care providers :
  • Communicates evaluation results and reports of therapy services to parents, educational staff, students, and relevant agencies

    Plans, conducts, and generates a summary assessment report in preparation for the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team meetings

    Attends IEP team meetings as needed and maintains progress notes on student records

    Reviews reports from health care providers requesting physical therapy and coordinates physical therapy services with students' health care providers

    Collaborates with district medical personnel to coordinate medical care protocols and serves as a resource in interpreting physical therapy services

    Assists with modification of school tasks and activities to accommodate the needs of students

    Offers consultation to school personnel and families on implementing physical therapy interventions and equipment to enhance student access and mobility in an educational setting

  • Manages equipment, travel and safety environment :
  • Adapts and maintains specialized equipment required for therapy services or student needs

    Researches and recommends types of equipment available to meet student needs

    Travels between locations where students require services

    Maintains a safe and organized treatment area

  • Acts as role model and maintains accurate physical therapy records :
  • Keeps clinical and administrative records in accordance with state guidelines and school board policy

    Submits records, reports and assignments promptly and efficiently

    Adheres to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education programs

    Participates in activities that promote professional development and use clinical / educational research to enhance direct services

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor or Master Degree in Physical Therapy program from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Experience in planning and providing physical therapy services, predominately to children and adolescents, in school settings, accredited medical centers, hospitals, clinics, and / or agencies, is preferred.

    Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid physical therapy license registered through the Physical Therapy Board of California or the California Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Valid California driver's license

    Equipment and assistive technology available to use in therapy

    Principles and practices of techniques used in the assessment of children with special needs

    Patient care skills, procedures and proficiencies.

    Language skills to document work activity and use physical therapist terminology

    Principles and practices of records management, and patient file documentation procedures

    District organization, operations, policies and objectives

    Ability to :

  • Utilize a variety of modern methods, techniques, and practices in physical therapy
  • Select and administer appropriate assessment and treatment activities

    Screen, evaluate and provide required physical therapy services

    Develop and implement individualized programs

    Read and understand a variety of correspondences, such as medical records, educational records, test results and directives

    Train others in simple therapy principles

    Properly and safety use the equipment and devices available to use in therapy, such as walkers, standers, seating systems, wheel chairs, canes, crutches, splints, body jackets, gonimeters, etc

    Lifts, moves and adjusts students, especially non-ambulatory students

    Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action

    Learn, understand, and apply district policies, procedures, and rules

    Accurately document sessions

    Establish and maintain a variety of files and records, and maintain confidentiality

    Collaborate effectively with others to carry out work

    Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing

    Work independently with little direction

    Use initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines

    Travel to other sites / locations throughout the District

    Working Environment

    Work is generally performed indoors where some safety considerations exist due to physical labor and to the nature of the position.

    Salary : Five step salary range that provides annual increases of approximately five percent until the fifth step is reached. New hire initial step placement (normally up to Step 3) based on qualifying education and experience as outlined in Merit System Rule 7.20.1. An employee who is promoted to a higher class shall be placed on the step of the new salary range that is at least five percent above the current rate, excluding any differential pay.

    Vacation : Earned based on assigned hours. Increased vacation allowance based on years of service with the district. Confidential employees receive an additional 3 days vacation allotment, up to a maximum of 22 days. Management employees receive 22 days of vacation (based on a 12-month assignment).

    Sick Leave : Earned at the rate of one day (based on the number of assigned hours) per month, and is accumulative from year to year.

    Holidays : Fourteen paid holidays per year (based on 12-month assignment).

    Insurance and Credit Union : The District offers a competitive Health and Welfare plan for employees and dependents. The Ventura Schools Federal Credit Union offers a variety of services.
