[job_card.job_description]Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration laws. Apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using advanced surveillance techniques. Investigating and interpreting physical evidence of illegal border crossings. Conducting various checks, including farm, building, and traffic inspections. Patrolling borders and coastal waterways using multiple government assets. One year of general work experience indicative of strong decision-making and composure under stress. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in any field. A combination of relevant experience and education may qualify. One year of specialized experience demonstrating proficiency in law enforcement, including sound judgment with firearms and effective communication skills. A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of relevant graduate-level education. A combination of specialized experience and education may qualify. Must be a U.S. Citizen and reside in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years. Candidates must be under 40 unless exempt due to prior law enforcement experience. Successful applicants will undergo six months of intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, including Spanish language instruction.

Salary and Benefits
Annual Base Salary for new Border Patrol Agents ranges from $49,739 to $89,518, depending on grade level (GL-5 / GL-7). Pay rates vary by duty location, and fully trained agents may receive additional compensation of up to 25% of their base pay. This is a career ladder position allowing progression through grade levels GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12, providing opportunities for advancement without the need to reapply.
Agents enjoy an extensive benefits package, including health, dental, and other insurance options, generous leave programs, and participation in a federal retirement plan similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
- Recruitment Incentive
- New agents may receive up to $20,000, with the first payment received after successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy.
- Retention Incentive
- New agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives distributed over the first four years.
