Job Summary
- Under general supervision, performs and reports routine and special laboratory tests on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients.
Essential Functions
Performs analyses in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood bank and microbiology according to expected performance standardsPerforms venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick on identified patients by physician's request in a timely, accurate and caring mannerKeeps documented records current regarding maintenance and quality controlFollow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test resultsMaintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimensAdhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performedBe capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or directorFollow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performanceDocument all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specificationsKnowledge / Skills / Abilities / Expectations
Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimen handling guidelines and proceduresSkilled in using applicable laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes, autoclaves, and sterilizersAbility to work quickly and accurately when under strict deadlinesConsiderable knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical laboratory methods and instrumentationWorking knowledge of anatomy, physiology, laboratory medicine, disease processes, and laboratory proceduresAbility to maintain confidentiality of all patient and / or employee information to assure patient and / or employee rights are protectedMust read, write and speak fluent EnglishMust have good and regular attendanceApproximate percent of time required to travel : 0%Performs other related duties as assignedQualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology from an accredited institutionLicenses / Certifications
Current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is requiredCertification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by a nationally recognized agency / board preferredExperience
1-2 years of acute care hospital lab experience in high complexity testing preferred
