Class A Heavy Equipment Transporter – Duties & Responsibilities
A Class A heavy equipment transporter is responsible for hauling, loading, and securing oversized and heavy construction equipment safely and legally between job sites.
Driving & Transport
- Operate Class A commercial vehicles (lowboys, flatbeds, step decks, RGN trailers)
- Transport heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, and grinders
- Plan routes considering height, weight, width, and road restrictions
- Comply with DOT, FMCSA, and state transportation regulations
Loading & Securement
Load and unload heavy equipment using ramps, winches, or self-loading methodsSecure loads using chains, binders, straps, and blocking per DOT standardsVerify weight distribution and axle limitsInspect securement before, during, and after transportPermits & Documentation
Obtain and comply with oversize / overweight permits when requiredMaintain logbooks, trip reports, and shipping documentsComplete pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports (DVIRs)Safety & Equipment Care
Perform daily inspections of tractor, trailer, and tie-down equipmentIdentify mechanical issues and report or arrange repairsFollow job-site and highway safety proceduresUse spotters and proper signaling during loading / unloadingFuel equipment prior to transportationJob Site Coordination
Communicate with dispatchers, site supervisors, and equipment operatorsCoordinate escorts or pilot cars when requiredAdditional Responsibilities
Operate equipment to position it for transportMaintain cleanliness and organization of truck and trailerWork extended hours, nights, or weekends as neededCommon Requirements
Valid Class A CDL (often with endorsements)Knowledge of heavy equipment and load securement standardsAbility to work in all weather and demanding conditionsStrong attention to detail and safety awareness
