We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Lead Residential Designer to support our clients team. The Lead Residential Designer will be responsible for shaping the future of the company's home plan portfolio, blending creativity, technical precision, and market awareness to deliver designs that elevate our brand and meet the needs of our homeowners. This role will lead the development of both production and custom home designs, ensuring plans are functional, buildable, and aligned with company standards while establishing a distinct architectural identity for the brand.
Key Areas of Responsibility :
- Existing Product Design – Review and refresh the current home plan portfolio, including redesigning elevations, updating layouts, and creating new elevation options to keep collections current and competitive.
- Luxury / Custom Plan Portfolio – Develop a set of signature base plans and options ranging from conceptual design through design development. Establish a recognizable design identity for Massengill Design Build that reflects quality, craftsmanship, and architectural distinction.
- Community-Specific Design – Create and adapt plans for new communities with larger lots and homes ranging from 2,500–4,000 sq. ft., ensuring designs maximize lot potential and appeal to the luxury market.
- Unique Lot Opportunities – Design or modify plans to fit uniquely shaped lots, particularly in infill neighborhoods, to optimize space and functionality.
- Lot-Specific Construction Plans – Produce detailed architectural construction drawings tailored to each specific lot, ensuring accuracy, buildability, and alignment with community guidelines.
Skills and Abilities :
Proven experience in residential design, drafting, or architectural planning (luxury / custom home design experience strongly preferred).Proficiency in architectural design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Chief Architect, or similar).Strong understanding of residential construction practices, building codes, and permitting requirements.Ability to create both conceptual designs and detailed construction drawings.Strong eye for design aesthetics, architectural proportion, and livability.Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously.Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with clients, team members, and trade partners.Leadership experience with the ability to mentor junior designers or drafters.Work Environment & Travel Requirements :
This position is primarily remote and requires a professional home office setup, including reliable high-speed internet and a quiet environment suitable for virtual meetings. While the role is work-from-home, candidates must be willing to travel to job sites or the main office a minimum of twice per month, and up to once per week during the initial onboarding period.
