Corrosion Prevention Specialist

Basic Function

HF Sinclair Midstream is seeking a Corrosion Prevention Specialist. This position plans, guides, collects and analyzes data for tasks related to the cathodic protection / corrosion control program for company owned and operated pipelines, tanks, and facilities.

Job Duties

(functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

• Designs corrosion mitigation systems and collecting and analyzing data to prepare detailed engineering evaluations to determine the most practical and cost effective means of protecting both new and existing pipeline facilities from corrosion
• Provides technical expertise and guidance to Operations and Engineering for the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the Company’s corrosion control / cathodic protection assets
• Utilizes corrosion related testing equipment and methods to evaluate company owned pipelines, tanks, and facilities for corrosion and corrosion related defects and adequacy of the cathodic protection program
• Provides expertise, training, qualification evaluations and continuous guidance to Operations corrosion technicians and management
• Directs corrosion aspects of the design and execution of major projects for the company from the concept stage through completion
• Develops and implements plans and analysis for the correction of any deficiencies or corrosion failures identified
• Identifies potential problems with company procedures written to comply with state and federal regulations and department technical policies and practices
• Develops, supports and enforces the department technical policies and procedures that are used to maintain and operate the pipeline systems. Evaluates how procedures impact field manpower, employee safety, materials, equipment and expenses in order to meet minimum requirements and the desired level of reliability and performance.
• Develop and analyze useful corrosion data metrics to drive continuous improvement
• Ensure the accuracy and integrity of corrosion data by developing and implementing change management and quality assurance strategies
• Monitors and coordinates all measurements of electrical activity in the soil and the pipeline using voltmeters, amp meters, resistivity meters and other related equipment
• Determines where deficiencies with cathodic protection exist from contractor surveys and develops plans to remedy deficiencies.
• Completes cathodic protection corrosion surveys including annual surveys and specialty surveys including DC Close Interval Surveys, ACVG / DCVG, ECDA / ICDA, and AC CIS
• Advanced Interpretation of internal corrosion data collected from coupons and liquid samples
• Maintain records for all surveys, tests, work progress reports in accordance with state, federal and company policies
• Compare company procedures and standards for adherence with applicable industry standards including AMPP (NACE) and API
• Prepares and participates in PHMSA, state and internal audits
• Participate in corrosion related local correlation committee meetings
• Participate in AMPP functions, including local chapter meetings, area conferences, and technical committees

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their manager, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years on-the-job experience is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE :

On-the-job pipeline construction and / or pipeline operations experience and a background in electrical theory. Use of MCMiller GX field computer and MC Miller Proactive software.

Education Level

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of a level III NACE Cathodic Protection Technologist Certification and NACE Senior Corrosion Technologist Certification are required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION :

A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.

Required Skills

Advanced level reading and writing skills and the ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations is required. Ability to plan, organize, and carryout duties with minimal supervision. Proficient with MS10 operating system. Advanced understanding and use of Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Visio. Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of co-workers and other external contacts. Required to maintain operator qualifications related to corrosion prevention. Advanced understanding of DOT CFR 49 Part 195 & 192 requirements. Will be required to maintain company owned vehicle and operate on occasion in an off-road environment. Occasionally will need to operate company owned all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to perform job duties. Ability to lead and train other company personnel.

Supervisory / Managerial Responsibility

May lead the work of others from time to time.

Work Conditions

Office based with up to 20% travel by land or air required. At times required to work in a refinery / industrial environment or outdoors; subject to varying weather conditions and temperatures. May be exposed to loud noises, vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, dust, dirt, mud, water, petroleum products, chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and / or extreme temperatures. On occasion may work near moving mechanical parts and / or rotating equipment, may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock. May have to work in close confined spaces or in high places up to 50 feet.

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, working in confined spaces, lifting or carrying up to 80 lbs, pushing or pulling up to 50lbs., climbing up to 50 ft, ability to perceive color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment and may on occasion be required to wear a respirator in emergency situations.
