Salary and Benefits
The annual base salary for newly appointed Law Enforcement Officers varies by grade level, with the following ranges :
GL-5 / GL-7 : $49,739 - $89,518 per year. Pay rates may vary based on duty location, and a fully trained officer could be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay due to the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with progression through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 levels. You will be eligible for promotion to the next higher grade upon successfully completing 52 weeks in each grade.
Border Patrol Agents are eligible for an array of federal benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).

GL-5 Grade Level Qualifications :
Experience : One year of general work experience demonstrating the ability to take charge and make sound decisions in stressful situations. Understanding regulations and methods through training and the ability to gather information through observation is required.
Education Substitution : A bachelor's degree or equivalent four-year college education in any field from an accredited institution.
Combination of Experience and Education : Consideration will be given to a mix of experience and completed education.
GL-7 Grade Level Qualifications :
Experience : One year of specialized work experience demonstrating skills in judgment, decision-making in firearms use, and effective interactions in law enforcement contexts.
Experience must include making arrests and analyzing information to make prompt decisions in law enforcement situations.
Education Substitution : A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education in a related field from an accredited institution.
Combination of Experience and Education : This will also be considered based on submitted documentation.
Other Requirements
Citizenship : Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
Residency : Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction : Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday, with exceptions for eligible veterans and prior federal law enforcement service members.
Formal Training : Upon being hired, you will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of extensive training in laws, operations, and physical techniques required for Border Patrol Agents. Fluency in Spanish and English is required, and training will enhance your skills in both languages.
