Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents ranges from $51,632 to $92,219 based on grade level (GL-5 / GL-7). You will have access to various federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, a generous leave program, and the option to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement program similar to a traditional ROTH 401(k).

Recruitment Incentive

Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $20,000 in incentives. The first $10,000 is awarded upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 for selecting a prioritized duty location.

Retention Incentive

New Border Patrol Agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives across their first four years.

Duty Locations

Be prepared for potential duty assignments at the Southwest Border or other critical locations. The U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational needs, which might not align with preferred locations. Relocation might be necessary.

This position offers a career ladder with a progression through GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12. You will be eligible for promotions based on successful completion of one year in each grade.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Border Patrol Agent, you will be part of a dedicated workforce focused on safeguarding the American people by securing the borders, deterring illegal activities, and fostering economic prosperity. Your typical responsibilities will include :

• Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting related documents and belongings.
• Preventing and apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers near borders, utilizing surveillance techniques including infrared scopes for nighttime operations.
• Interpreting and following physical evidence related to unlawful entries.
• Conducting various checks, including those of farms, buildings, roads, and cities.
• Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using government vehicles and other assets.
